Regional television is low-paid slave labour. Believe me, I was in there for 10 years.

So here’s some advice from an industry professional to all those high school kiddies looking to attend this careers day: If you do go for a job at a regional station like SC10, plan to get out within a few years, and treat it as a training ground. Yes, it is an “opportunity”, but “opportunity” and “good, well-paid, satisfying job” aren’t the same thing.

Oh i agree with you in that respect. For example, if i was interested in becoming a sound engineer, i think the television industry would be quite a good job. However, if i was thinking of getting famous on tv, then i think i’d need a quick reality check.

Hey you’re right Davo, in my close-minded state I negelected to think of any other target once the red mist crept in behind the eyes… Good call man.

I guess what I was getting at is that because of the whole shot at fame, being part of an exciting industry, the word ‘opportunity’ is thrown around a lot more after the fact.

You get your job on your merits because you’re skilled, enthusiastic and brilliant at what you do, but you’re perceived as lucky because they have given you an ‘opportunity’.

I love it how the media always describe their positions as an ‘opportunnity’.

They will hold you to ransom, using that ‘opportunity’ line every time in your future pay negotiations.

Ummm i think every company advertisement i’ve ever seen describes their opening position as an opportunity – it does imply the person should be ‘enthusiastic’. Imagine if it said ‘oh we are just looking for people to fill this job’ would you go for it?

Reminds me of Taronga Zoo positions, if you are lucky enough to be selected as a volunteer (after interviews and application writing), you get to do all the duties of a cage cleaner – except unpaid :). then after one year, they ‘might’ select one person for paid work. Now THAT is when your pay negotiations would involve ‘ransom’

I love it how the media always describe their positions as an ‘opportunnity’.

What will happen is they will get a fresh faced kid out of school give them all the crappy jobs, pay them somewhere around 20 grand a year and they might get a free movie or concert ticket every now and then.

I feel sorry for the people who have gone to media school, be it AFTRS or Chrles Sturt or wherever who would have hoped to have taken these ‘opportunities’ once they had finished their tertiary educations, looks like you could have got in straight out of high school! (at least that’s the impression they are giving opening it up to high school graduates IMO).

The only time it would ever be a legitimate opportunity is if they detailed the ‘career opportunities’ they speak of and provide some kind of career guidance or learning and development type program.

Besides, to seize the majority of ‘opportunities’ provided they’d need to have some kind of talent, otherwise they’re gonna be just another Hotdogs…

Having seen what happens in the Canberra media in the past (remember when Prime marched their entire news team? or people being boned from local radio stations? or even how WIN caved and sacked their Cheif of Staff and a journo a few weeks ago?) I’d hardly describe any of it as an opportunity. Unless it’s an oppportunity to open yourself up to being exposed to loose ethics and exploitation.

But there is hope, maybe a messiah will be brough forth from the school system to bring honesty and integrity back to the Canberra media. YEAH RIIIIIIIIGGGGGGHHHHHHHHTTTTTT!!!
