Travelling North at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre - A review

I saw David Williamson’s Travelling North at the Tiuggeranong Arts Centre on Tuesday night. (It only played Monday and Tuesday).

Terence Donovan and Sandy Gore played the lead roles in this humorous and bathos filled play about growing old and grumpy and falling and staying in love. (I can relate to the growing grumpy part quite well). The tension between the grown up daughters with their own families and concerns and Mum, as Mum agonises between them and her love, were drawn out well.

Apart from a few fluffed lines this was a good production. I not only had a good laugh – Williamson is like that – I also had a chance to reflect on my own mortality and my closest relationships.

I will definitely be going back to the Tuggeranong Arts Centre for other plays. It is intimate and immediate and it looks like they choose good shows. Tim Sharp’s paintings on the walls on the way in – Laser beak man comes to Canberra – were an added bonus with their humour and naive approach.
