Another long year for AFL fans

The NAB Cup opens tonight with Collingwood playing West Coast at Subiaco, and it looks like Prime is going to make it another series of very late nights for AFL fans.

The Canberra Times TV guide tells me Prime will replay the game at 1am.

For those with Foxtel, it’s on Main Event (518) live from 8.30, but for long suffering AFL supporters in this city with only free to air services, it’s going to be another long (late) season.

Shanefos, I resemble that remark!

Ivan – the games that clashed with the Swans ‘Canberra’ were generally shown on 518, but not advertised or acknowledged anywhere…

Nope, including the Main Event channel, that’s the focus however as there is inevitably something else on that channel (boxing, wrestling etc…).

Oddly, the SMH TV guide and my digital program guide thought that Prime would be doing a smart thing and showing the game on their HD channel from 8:30. Of course, they did not.

What did they show instead? A non-HD simulcast of Sister Act from their main channel.

I noticed this as well, and was looking forward to it after having already sat through “Honey” on what was a very lacklustre TV viewing night.

But alas some new release called “Sister Act” was on both Prime channels…

c’arna cats!

I was going to say, it was scheduled for 8.30 on Prime HD. I wasn’t home to see it, but sometimes it takes a while for Prime to flick the switch and get the HD feed from Seven. Sometimes i’ll go to channel 60 to watch something, find its not there, flick away and then back and its suddenly there..

Call Prime and ask them what the deal was!

Proudly declared on numerous occassions shanefos. Excellent win last night.

GF and Bundybear: you almost sound like Collingwood supporters!

I was told last year that because all AFL games are included on the Govt Anti-Siphoning list of sigificant sporting events, if a FTA network decides to show it they must show it FIRST on their primary analogue channel before they are allowed to show it on their digital channel (as not everyone has digital). Though not sure how 10 in Melb & Sydney can show the F1 which is also listed?

Chapter 11 in “When good laws go bad” by Richard Alston. Thankfully meant to be reviewed this year – hopefully it won’t get lost in the GFC turmoil.

Does Prime not like the idea of getting some extra viewers? Are they enjoying wasting their money on their 99% pointless HD channel? I hope so.

Foxtel is the go. Watching sporting events without ads is worth the $50 odd dollars a month.

For the AFL you actually get to see replays of a goal.

QFT!

No we dont get every game live here in the ACT, not by a long shot, especially when the Swans play in Manuka.

Last season we had the same game on free to air (feed from Sydney), on main event & I think 2 radio stations also.

I pay for Foxtel & prefer the coverage to free to air but there was at least 4 occasions where I wasn’t able to see my team play live.

With you GF, Swans suck rs

We have EVERY AFL premiership season game live in the ACT – nowhere else do others get that. Not in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide where their games are on delayed coverage

OK, you have to pay for the privelage but it is worth every cent

Shanefos, you know as well as I do that Swans supporters are not football supporters. They are the hillsong happy clappers of the AFL

Since we have ‘freeview’ and broadcasters have digital channels coming out of their ears… I don’t understand why we can’t AFL coverage here 🙁

Unless you’re a Swans supporter, in which case, you’ll see pretty much every game on free-to-air (including the two games played in Canberra).
