Competition to brighten intersections

John Hargreaves kindly reminds us that the Colour in Canberra competition closes tomorrow.

That fact that I’d never heard of the competition aside, it sounds pretty interesting.

The government’s been receiving submissions from all kinds of people — artists, school children and ordinary people — for designs to be painted on 30 traffic controller boxes around the city.

After the winning designs have been chosen (there are cash prizes involved), Urban Services will give the successful artists suitable paint, safety equipment and directions to the traffic controller they’re allowed to paint their design on.

Presumably the competition will run again over the next few years, as I’m pretty sure there are more than 30 traffic light intersections in Canberra, and surely they could all do with a bit of colour and excitement.
