Canberra Talent

While listening to 666 last week, I was surprised to hear (during a review of the new movie Tracks) that Mia Wasikowska (lead actress in said movie) was born in Canberra. I was so surprised that it got me to thinking about how little I hear about Canberra born and/or raised artists – or anyone making an impact on a Global stage.

Are we not ‘breeding’ this talent or are we just not talking about it? Or (an option which may well be just as relevant) am I listening and reading in the wrong places…?

During our Centennial year I saw advertisements on TV from Reese Muldoon and another lady who I didn’t know (I have been out of the country for a while so that is in no way to say she has limited relevance) talking about being ‘from Canberra’ and what that meant to them.

I wonder if this is something that can/should go further afield – to inspire us – and our children to great things…

Who are you aware of as a great Canberra born/raised success?

Um, and Manning Clark was not a Canberran.

i wasn’t vouching for the veracity of his major works, or his origins – only that he was a renowned long-term resident here…

Current NBA player Patrick Mills went to Marist.

Sam Michael, the sporting director at MacLaren F1, is a Canberra boy too.

oui! Frank Gambale! Who remembers Nunzio from the Pro Audio TV ads? He’s his brother. You can see a “Pro Audio” sticker on Franks guitar here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7j2qzs6kmY

I have heard of Lisa Cox (Fairfax Media) and Heartbreak Hotel (the late Elvis Presley’s hit) but I don’t believe there is any connection.

What a surprise!

Another contender I can think of is the Young Docteurs, band members from Dickson College from memory.

Also, although not born in Canberra, he did spend some time here – Jackie Chan. According to Wikipedia “Chan joined his parents in Canberra in 1976, where he briefly attended Dickson College and worked as a construction worker. A fellow builder named Jack took Chan under his wing, earning Chan the nickname of “Little Jack” which was later shortened to “Jackie” and the name Jackie Chan has stuck with him ever since.”

There is no requirement for talent in reading the news or flicking switches to stream programmes. How many ABC people have made a successful career in the entertainment sector outside the ABC?
I’ll bet someone suggests Bob Carr.
I watch the ABC because their news resources are extensive and they don’t have paid advertisements although their self-promotion ads (especially on News 24) are getting too frequent and too long.

Youre right. ABC can only dream of stars of the calibre of say Robert Hughes.

Person in question is a female. He wont be doing squat!

Not knowing who TF you are posting about, just makes your post even more retarded.

Says the moron who’s username is completely incorrect in any Slavic language you wish to choose from. And how would I know let alone care about some Z grade Canberra person let alone one on a TV show that is popular exclusively amongst stupid people?

First, you think Erin is a man’s name, then you resort to insulting someone’s username when they call you out on it. You’re awesome.

I’m no fan of Erin’s work, but she’s no doubt more successful than you are and a hell of a lot happier. You come across as a hate filled little man with very little positive going on. Feel free to retort with any insult you like.

The sad thing about keyboard warriors is that they somehow feel empowered to fling insults to people that they would never dare repeat in person. Don’t you feel embarrassed about the way you conduct yourself on here? I’m guessing not.

Who is this Erin person you keep referring to?? What are you blathering about? Why would I feel embarrassed about posting anonymously on a website that I come to for no other reason than anger people that take “online” seriously? Get a job and change your username you dolt

Why would I want a second job?

Given no genuine troll would ever out themselves as such (because that would defeat the purpose of trolling in the first place), I’ll assume you’re invoking the classic “I’m not an imbecile, I’m just trolling lolz roflcopter etc” defence. None of us are buying it.

BTW, it’s a shame how such a positive post turned negative (and yep, I’ve contributed to that). Mia Wasikowska, Rupert Reid, Sigrid Thornton, Lara Cox, Mick Molloy are another bunch born in Canberra.

She started on TransACT’s video on demand service Channel Vision I believe and then Win hired her. Personally I can’t stand her presentation style, and those try something different segments on Win News (were they Jorian’s last idea before the sack?) were cringeworthy, but good on her none the less for charting a very successful path in the media.

And another band member, Pip Branson …

Yep, Pip Branson does alright still. He pops back into town at Christmas time and puts on quite a good show with the Cell Block 69 folks. Many of them have also had their own success too.

“AFL” isn’t a sport. Its called Australian rules football. You know – the national game. You compare Aussie Rules to thugby league let me guess? Sorry – only sports that require skill, talent and athleticism count in this list.

GayFL or whatever the so called “National Game” is, is far from Globally recognised.

I was pointing out the fact that a corporate governing body isn’t a sport, peanut. And its hardly a souly “Victorian game” when it is the sport of every single state and territory except NSW and QLD. Not to mention the fact that both these states have a huge amounts of people in them that follow the national game.

HUGE AMOUNTS!!!!
or to show the insignificance of Australian Rules Football … less than 0.002 % of the global population.
I love the self appointed tag “National Game”. There are more netball & soccer players nationally. Why is Aussie Rules the National Game? Is it because no-one outside of the southern states of Australia is silly enough to play it?
BTW the International Rugby Board has over 180 member nations.
GLOBAL.

Surely the positive aspects are drawn from the experiences of the area and not defined by a line across the road somewhere?

Just my 2 bobs worth

FWIW, although Brad Haddin is from Qbyn, he spent almost all his Canberra senior cricket career – and definitely his ‘formative’ years – playing for the ANU. So we can count his talent as Canberran.

although I guess on that argument, the reverse also applies to those who grew up in Canberra but otherwise formed their skills somewhere else

Think it’s probably time to disown James HIrd, though, narcissistic prick.

Other lesser lights include Micky Conlon, Shaun Smith, Brett Allison, Aaron Hamill, Justin Blumfield plus a few others and currently Jason Tutt (Bulldogs) along with Josh Bruce and Phil Davis (both GWS).

Claiming Nathan Buckley is a bit rich, though. He was born in Adelaide and spent most of his formative years in SA and NT. A year with Ainslie doesn’t cut it I’m afraid.

If we’re claiming Queanbeyan’s Brad Haddin as our own, may as well add Mark Webber, David Campese, Heather McKay and a bunch of other struggle town greats.

I’m not a huge NRL fan, but have we already forgotten Brad Clyde, Ricky Stuart et al? Similarly, Steven Larkham and his mates?

Can we lay a small claim to Samara Weaving?

All AFL/VFL players are lesser lights.

“AFL” isn’t a sport. Its called Australian rules football. You know – the national game. You compare Aussie Rules to thugby league let me guess? Sorry – only sports that require skill, talent and athleticism count in this list.

There’s me, of course. I just haven’t been ‘discovered’ yet.

Victoria Nicholls from soap opera and quiz shows of the 80s
Sybilla Budd from various also…

I lived in a group house with Alex O’Loughlin whos real name is Scalthorpe back in 94/95.

Speaking of which, nobody has mentioned Joel Monaghan.

Gee didn’t his career dive after he let a dog give him head.

League players are tops. Thanks for the reminder.

Not sure if it counts, but Simon Overland, controversial ex Victorian Police Commissioner is from Canberra. I went to school with him…

Mrs LSWCHP has bumped into Ms Wasikowska around town on a number of occasions, and says she is a very pleasant young woman.

These are all the people that IMDB knows of…

Erin McNaught was one I didn’t know of…

Reading the latest comments on the thread about asbestos (at Dickson) reminded me, sadly, of Lincoln Hall.

Matthew Reilly and Hayley Jensen are a couple more. We can even lay claim to Jackie Chan. His parents lived here, and he attended Dickson College.

Mick Molloy was born at the old Canberra Hospital. The Church were a Canberra band. Sigrid Thornton was born in Canberra. The music video for Bloke by Chris Franklin (2000) was filmed in Tuggeranong.

Matthew Le Nevez (Dr Patrick on Offspring…RIP) is also from Canberra.

Wish I knew him when he was…. 🙁

Alex O’Loughlin (sp?) From the new Hawaii Five-0 show was born and grew up in Canberra

It’s a very long list, including both those who are from Canberra and those we claim as our own:

Cricket: Brad Haddin, Nathan Lyon, Michael Bevan. AFL: James Hird, Nathan Buckley, Phil Davis. Basketball: Lauren Jackson, Patty Mills.

Got heaps more, gotta go.
