Special pleading for the Raiders

Sports Minister Andrew Barr is exhorting us all to get out to the Stadium In Bruce on Sunday afternoon to support the Raiders.

With only four home matches left, the ACT Government and the Canberra Raiders are urging Canberrans to get out to Canberra Stadium and back the team in the lead-up to the NRL finals series.

To encourage Canberrans out to the games the Raiders are offering Big Mal’s Final Five packages saving fans money with tickets for $90 per person (a saving of$30) or $270 for a group of four (a saving of $210).

Fans who take up the package will also become financial members of the Raiders and will receive a membership kit which includes a Raiders Collectors Tin, Raiders Scarf, Raiders lanyard and Raiders Sticker set. The Raiders are just 200 members short of their 5,000 member target.

The AFL’s reaction at the next round of negotiations will be interesting.

barking toad – no hail marys for me! I am proud to say my Carlton membership goes nicely alongside my Manly Sea eagles membership.

That is one of the great things about Canberra – the freedom to follow almost any sport….

I support my local teams.

The only trouble is I can’t afford to support all of them by turning up to games.

If I do choose to spend up on the kids and go and see a local teams home game, a win is always a bonus, for me and the kids.

At least going to see a Capitals game I have a good chance of a win, and don’t get smacked in the hip pocket as much.

Surely I can’t be slandered for this option. (let slandering begin)

I would be more inclined to go if Bruce stadium wasnt such a crappy venue. Its always freezing and that is my deterrent from going out and supporting raiders.

I’m taking my boy because we like the footy & supporting a Canberra team. Tricky idea huh?

I find it very sad that the Raiders’ most trenchant critics aren’t Sydneysiders or Brisbanites, but Canberrans. In my book you should support your local team, win or lose.

The problem, of course, is that people find it much easier to be cynical.

Andrew may need to re-visit mathematics. Any hope of making the finals for the Raiders evaporated with their last loss

Will they be checking drivers licenses or similar to ensure Qbn residents don’t turn up.

I’m taking my boy because we like the footy & supporting a Canberra team. Tricky idea huh?

If I wanted to go and had the choice between the two, I’d be heading to the AFL. Iexpect the AFL will probably draw a larger crowd than the raiders game, as usual.

Sooooo, teh local council is trying to get punters to go to the Raiders game (CFMEU sponsored) and not the AFL game at Manuka Oval (council sponsored)? No conflict there eah!

And AG, your public admission of contributing to the mob at Price Fixer Park must be a cleansing moment. Like going to confession. How many Hail Mary’s did you cop?

Target of 5000 members? My membership of Carlton has assisted them reach a record of more than 47 000 members this year! No wonder the AFL is in such a strong financial position…..

At those rates they could buy about 8000 memberships for the low, low price of $720,000.

Why don’t the Raiders do discounted tickets all season?

Kids tickets are way too expensive.

I want to take my three year old daughter but, she wont last the whole game.

Why bother when you can sit at home and watch>

Yeah I want her to experience the footy, but not if it costs me a small fortune!!
