Keeping up with my quest to find Cheap Eats locations outside of Civic, I had heard about the lunch special at Jewel of India in Manuka and was keen to try it out. Indian for a Friday treat on a rainy day sounds good to me!
Jewel of India are located upstairs in the Manuka Court arcade off Bougainville Street. Despite the notion that Cheap Eats restaurants are ‘cheap’ in quality (totally not true!) these guys actually were in the Top 20 Best Restaurants in Canberra in 2013 for the Good Food guide, a pretty high honour!
The cool thing about the lunch special is that you can order it online! So convenient if you’re like me and don’t get much time away from your desk. There’s 3 options for the lunch special. The first option includes rice and choice of 2 curries ($8.90), the second option includes, rice, two curries, and naan ($10.90) and the third option includes rice, two curries, naan and a drink ($12.90). I decided to go all out and order the third option. The curries I chose were butter chicken (obvious choice, I know) and Dal Makni which has a base of black lentils.
My meal was ready when I arrived and because you pre-pay online I was in and out in about 10 seconds.
Overall, the meal was good. I really enjoyed the Dal Makhni and butter chicken is always a favourite. Those little takeaway containers can be deceiving though, they fit so much food into them – I think I got through about half. The naan was good, again, the serving was quite big, but I don’t think there’s such a thing as too much naan!
The Jewel of India lunch special is a really high value for money lunch. Can highly recommend.
