Raiders, hostile Canberrans no match for Storm

The Canberra Raiders have gone down 17-6 to the Melbourne Storm in a spiteful game at Canberra Stadium tonight. ABC Grandstand has a report.

In a display of what $1 million in excess player payments can buy you, the Storm got out to a 13-0 lead in the first half. New boat owner Greg Inglis scored a hat-trick for Melbourne, while Daniel Vidot was the Raiders’ sole try-scorer and Josh Dugan was unlucky to have a try disallowed by the video referee. (While the Raiders were the architects of their own demise through some sloppy handling late in the first half, it would also be unsurprising if referee Ben Cummins arrived home tonight to find a new car in his driveway, as well).

Kudos to the parochial and suitably feral home crowd, which greeted the Storm with a chant of “cheats” at every opportunity, booed them from the field and gave the Green Machine a standing ovation at the end, despite the result.

Where is this bridge.

Tharwa?

Well the Raiders fans need something to chant about, there is no point chanting for a team of losers, the Storm were obviously the next best option. It was interesting to see when the scandal broke that the claim that all clubs rorted the salary cap, except the Raiders. The powers that be in the NRL might like to to cover their ears and go “lalalala I can’t hear you”, but if you look at each team and their players list, which is the only club with no star players? the Raiders. They say where there’s smoke, there’s fire..

I reckon Barry Hall is a great pickup for the Dogs and its good to see a packed Manuka Oval.

You beat me to it! Cam Smith and a couple of others are in it up to their eyeballs.

The Raiders club made a really nice gesture to the members of the Storm by offering free entry.

The Raiders fans on the other hand were pretty ordinary, with at least one incident requiring police assistance.

There was also one tosser who kept running to the sideline waving around brown paper bags at the Storm players. An AFL fan sitting behind me kinda took care of that by putting on a Bro’Town accent (with more than a hint of South African and helium inhaling) and saying such things as “Your club would do it too, but they only have six thousand members and no money” 🙂 (This was just a few minutes after the MC proudly announced they had just hit 6000 members this season)

As an ex-Melburnian and Storm fan living in Canberra, I was thinking of signing up as a Raiders member before last night. The promise of free entry and a really respectful attitude from the Raiders club towards Storm fans. After last night, I can think of better things to do than giving up my hard earned to a club whose supporters were chanting “Cheats” towards my team’s players.

(It was the officials that cheated, not the players, and certainly not the fans).

If you think the players are innocent I’ve got a bridge to sell you!

Leave the storm alone…They play fair.
