In Canberra, almost every household owns at least one car. Every day almost a million car journeys are made across the city. It’s crucial to maintain your vehicle. That’s for its reliability but also the safety and protection of you and your passengers.

If your car has ever broken down, you’ll understand the importance of a good mechanic. Whether you have a cracked windshield, an engine that won’t start or a flat tyre, a good mechanic will have you up and running in no time.

In this article, we’ll outline the qualities to consider when choosing a mechanic and share where to find the best in Canberra.

What makes a great mechanic?

Choosing the right mechanic can help take the stress out of getting your car fixed. It can also get you back on the road as quickly as possible.

It can be helpful to keep the following in mind when choosing a mechanic.

  • Qualified, skilled and experienced. You’ll want a mechanic who can solve a wide range of mechanical issues. A trained and experienced mechanic can identify and repair what’s wrong with your car, and quickly.
  • Passionate and reliable. Choose a mechanic who is passionate about cars and has attention to detail. This is a mechanic who will treat your car as if it’s their own.
  • Integrity. You’ll want a mechanic who operates with integrity and is above board. This is a mechanic who doesn’t take short cuts, charges a fair price, and is honest and transparent.
  • Efficient. Nobody wants a mechanic who takes ages to carry out repairs. Good mechanics have a strong work ethic and get the job done within the shortest amount of time possible, saving you time and money.
  • Knowledgeable. Motor vehicle technology rapidly evolves. The best mechanics have sound knowledge and stay on top of what’s happening in the industry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a child safety seat installed by a mechanic in Canberra?

Most mechanics in the ACT can install child safety seats. Strict laws govern restraints for children in vehicles so it's recommended that you have child safety seats installed and adjusted by a professional. A mechanic should also be able to check child seats for damage and if they're in safe working order. They can also advise on who you can maintain your child's seat.

If I can't get to a mechanic during the week, can I get my car serviced on the weekend?

Many Canberra mechanics are open on Saturdays. Check with each business to see if they're open on the weekend and what time (Saturday morning trading is reasonably common(. Mobile mechanics can come to you on weekends, although higher rates may apply.

Are any Canberra mechanics authorised vehicle inspections stations?

Yes, if your vehicle meets certain criteria you can take it to a mechanic that is listed as an authorised inspection station. Criteria that requires a roadworthy inspection includes the age of your car (more than six years old if transferring ownership); registration that has lapsed for more than 12 months; and if registration is transferring from interstate. Eighty-four authorised inspection stations operate in the ACT.

How frequently should you inspect tyre pressure?

Drivers should inspect tyre pressure every one to two months by themselves. It's very handy to do this since most petrol stations have pressure testers. This is important because some areas around Canberra are under construction which means nails or screws could be dropped on the road. These can damage your tyres. Check your tyre for its required pressure, or ask you mechanic to show you the correct method.

What should I do if my check engine light is illuminated?

If your car's "check engine" light is on, address it straight away. Several issues could be the cause, and some are more serious than others. Check your car's manual and consult your car service centre or mechanic immediately.

Profection Automotive in Hume are excellent. Pete and his team are fantastic mechanics they really look after you, they don’t treat me like an idiot, they take the time to explain everything properly and can offer a car for the day if you need it. They service my 21 year old Corolla and our 7 year old Jeep with equal love and attention. They are a great team of guys and can do just about anything your car requires!

I’ve been taking my cars to D’N’A Mechanical Repairs for years and always walk away knowing my car has been thoroughly serviced and that I’ve never been overcharged. This is a great mechanical repair shop.

I can highly recommend Harry’s Auto Care in Belconnen. Prompt, efficient and friendly service. Have taken previous cars to them – this week I took my ’98 Honda CRV which had a serious mechanical failure on a back wheel. Luckily this didn’t occur during the highway stretches of my daily commute. The fault turned out to be a snapped bolt. They quoted me half hour labour, replaced the bolt, checked the same bolts on the other wheels – and decided to let me simply drive away. In the past I’ve been charged aggressively for simple work at other mechanics – this was an amazing and heartfelt appreciated gesture. Thanks guys.
