Today is the day. Now in its eighth year, NewActon’s favourite experimental arts festival, Art, Not Apart, is back. The theme of ‘Climax’ has seeped into every area of the program which brims with tipping points, chaotic arts experiences, and nods to the dire environmental times in which we live. Find your comfort zone and prepare to step out of it with these six highlights not to miss at today’s festival.

Suitcase Rummage

Where: 15 Edinburgh Avenue
When: 1 pm – 7 pm

The ever-popular pop-up market returns, with 70+ stalls offering the best in arts and crafts, vintage clothes, and foodie goodness. The Rummage also marks the first outing for Gourmet Traveller’s bar of the year, Bar Rochford, which leads a roster of food and drink stalls including the likes of Morks, Asili, Cannoli Bros. and Wandering Woodfired Pizza.

The Artery

Where: The rock wall between Edinburgh Avenue and the Shine Dome
When: All day

You know the blank stone wall along Edinburgh Avenue? Well, it’s about to be entirely transformed by your new favourite visual artists. The works, including those from the likes of PAW and Musonga Mbogo, will adorn the 100-metre-long structure for weeks after the festival. Art, Not Apart embraces projects that are inherently temporary, and The Artery will be a testament to that for everyone passing through New Acton in March and April.

The Mermaid

Where: Various, check the website for specific locations
When: 3:30 pm, 4:15 pm and 5:15 pm

Canberra-based physical theatre artist, Hanna Cormick, is set to present her first work as an artist with disability. In a physical sense, The Mermaid falls victim to the toxic world above the waves. As a commentary, the work deconstructs the relationship between ability and restrictiveness. It makes clear that the individual is not disabled, their environment makes them so.

The Lawns Stage

Where: The lawns outside the Shine Dome
When: 12:45 pm – 7:15 pm, click here for performance times

Tapping into Canberra’s diverse and flourishing music scene, The Lawns Stage is filled to the brim with emerging and established sound artists. Sodium Sunday rep the city’s bright musical future, while Babyfreeze, Rumblr, and the elusive Fun Machine bring their own tried-and-tested flair. Indie-pop choir, Mixtape Chorus, are sure to take the younger generations on a nostalgia trip while pleasantly perplexing their mums and dads.

Freakin’ Out VR Experience

Where: PEAK Gallery, 23 Marcus Clarke Street
When: 1 pm – 7 pm

Riffing on this year’s focus on art/science cross-pollination, SAFIA have teamed up with local tech agency, Pursuit Technology, to present a virtual reality experience of the band’s latest single. The journey will take you through the tension and release of writer’s block as you’re immersed in a virtual interpretation of the scrutiny artists feel in an ominous creative landscape.

Afterparties

Where: Various locations
When: From 7 pm

Art, Not Apart is this year offering two distinct and intriguing afterparties. From 7:00pm til late, Sound and Fury indulge the festival’s wild side, with glam-punks Glitoris soundtracking an evening of visual art, music, and dance in the NFSA’s South Gallery. From 9 pm, a shuttle bus can loop you over to a top secret Fyshwick location for the crowning jewel of warehouse parties, tech-yes. Think techno, projections and multiple stages taking you all the way through until Sunday morning. Tickets for both events are a must.

What are you most excited for at Art, Not Apart this year?
