Remember the sheer joy you felt as a child when school holidays rolled around? When you could forget homework and teachers, and run full speed into weeks of freedom and fun? Ah, the halcyon days, before you had children of your own and school holidays became synonymous with the words ‘expensive’ and ‘inconvenient’.
Every few months you face the same task of finding something entertaining yet cost-effective for the kids to do. Ideally, it will be something engaging and not just diversionary, and it’ll be flexible enough that you can work the rest of your day around it. At Belconnen Arts Centre, we’re parents too, so we understand. That’s why we’ve designed an autumn school holiday program that works for everybody, proudly supported by Ray White Canberra.
Between Tuesday 17 April and Friday 27 April, Belconnen Arts Centre will be hosting daily visual arts classes for children aged five to 12 years old. Can’t get to the morning class at 10 am? That’s ok, there’s another one at 1:30 pm. Can only make it on certain days? No problem, you don’t have to sign up for all the classes – do one, two or as many as you like.
Well-loved children’s art tutor Mary Kayser will be leading kids aged 5-7 years through a series of crafty classes that explore modelling with clay, block printing, drawing and felting. Children will have the chance design their own insect using clay, foil and wire; they can make wrapping papers, cards and envelopes for special occasions; and they can use coloured wool to make pouches and other felted creations.
For those aged 8-12 years, local artist Mariana del Castillo will guide them in the development of an array of whimsical creatures. Desert dogs, dragonflies and celestial birds will be constructed, with Indigenous Australian and Native American decorative styles explored through sewing, drawing, painting and sculpting.
Each day will focus on a different craft project, with four classes per day (two for ages 5-7, two for ages 8-12). Classes run for two hours, with sessions starting at 10 am and 1:30 pm. While the kids are in class, you could enjoy a coffee at our kiosk or pop out to nearby Belconnen Mall. At only $20 per child, per session, you’ll have plenty of money left over for shopping!
You are not locked in to doing all the classes – you can choose exactly which days and times suit you. For the full breakdown of classes offered each day or to enrol, head to the Classes for Kids section of our website.
