Long-standing Canberra residents are familiar with the region’s relatively dry continental climate. Canberra sees the best of Australia’s hot summers and the coldest of winters. Interestingly, despite these variances, rainfall across the region delivers a substantial monthly average of 50-75mm. That is a lot of rain to save for a dry day.

In recent years Canberra and surrounds have experienced the toll of drought. Given this predicament, finding ways to reduce reliance on mains water not only provides greater flexibility – it can help to reduce your water bill too.

Well-designed water management systems are the key to this solution, including the installation of water storage tanks. These systems allow you to harness and reuse one of our most precious resources, water. Using rainwater around the home is highly beneficial. Plants love a good rainwater drink and you can use it to flush toilets and wash clothing too.

The good news is that rainwater tanks are no longer eyesores of a bygone era. They are feats of engineering that can seamlessly blend into the most conspicuous surrounds. With options aplenty selecting a water tank and the systems to capture and utilise it can be overwhelming.

This is where contracting an experienced water tank installer makes perfect sense. But what should you look for in a water tank installer; and where do you find the best in Canberra? Read on to find out.

What makes a great water tank installer?

The best water tank installers can design, implement, and maintain sophisticated water storage systems for any property. They provide advice with knowledgeable tradespeople discussing multiple factors around why a client wants a tank and what they want to use if for. The best installers run through options and the best solution. They take into account size, location, type of tank and the number of downpipes that can be connected. Equally important is to explore options like first flush and leaf-eater, type of pump and type of base (like sand or concrete).

When searching for a water tank installer in Canberra we suggest you keep an eye on the following:

  • Qualified, licensed and insured. As with most trades, ensuring your water tank installer holds the right credentials is so important. Whilst some aspects of tank installation can be completed by a handy person, others require a licensed plumber or electrician. Before contracting an installer check for appropriate licensing along with public liability insurance.
  • End-to-end servicing. Water tanks and their accompanying systems sound simple, though can be quite complex particularly when dealing with those encased underground. The best water tank installers are well versed in the end-to-end delivery of the system in its entirety. This includes planning and design, recommendations on tank size and type, implementation of water collection components, and of course all water distribution components. Finally, check for post installation services such as repairs or maintenance.
  • Quality products. Whilst water tanks can be sourced in a variety of materials each equally as good as the last, quality selections tend to fare better in the long run. Look for an installer that stocks reputable brands and quality products, be it the tanks themselves or the pumps and fittings used with it. On-going maintenance and repairs due to lack lustre products can be costly, so getting this right the first time will ensure your set up goes the distance.
  • Warranties. The best water tank installers will offer guarantees on not only their products but also their work. Look for an installer that has existing relationships with quality manufacturers offering longstanding product warranties. With the average water tank lifespan being around 20 years, a warranty to cover at least half of this will be helpful.
  • Regulation compliant. Regulations may cover water tank installation depending on whether you are installing while renovating, retrofitting, or building new. Consult Access Canberra and Icon Water to see which regulations apply in your area; and ensure your water tank installer understands and adheres to these.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can stored rainwater be used for?

Stored rainwater has a multitude of uses both in and outdoors. Outdoor usage can include supplying irrigation or hoses; and topping up swimming pools or ponds. Indoor usage can include toilets, and with water quality control even washing machines and baths. Intended usage will guide additional installation services such as concreting, plumbing, and electrical.

What size water tank do I need?

The size of tank needed is generally dependant on the volume of rainwater caught and average water consumption. A simple way to estimate the volume of rainwater your property can capture is to multiply the area of water catchment – such as a roof, by the average rainfall in the region. Next, multiple your average daily water usage by the number of days without rain. For example, if you use 100 litres per day and expect a dry spell of 50 days you will need a tank with a 5,000 litre capacity.

What type of water tank is best?

Residential use water tanks are made in a variety of materials including concrete, fibreglass, plastic, and metal. Most tank materials are suitable for irrigation or toilet flushing. If water is to be used for food preparation, washing machines or bathing then opt for one that is made from, or lined with a food grade material. Always consult the manufacturer for advice on the best material solution.

What does a water tank cost?

Costs vary depending on tank capacity, material, whether installed above or below ground and whether any extras like pumps are required. For a small, freestanding model without a pump or extras expect to pay from $800 to upwards of $3,000. Large, custom-built models are generally higher in price.

How long do water tanks last?

Tank longevity can be subject to factors such as maintenance, the tanks positioning, and quality of the water within. Generally, the expected lifetime of a tank is approximately 20 years. Most manufacturers offer warranties of between 10 to 25 years.

envirofriendly in phillip – fantastic. They did my tank and water system.

Gungahlin Al9:24 am 07 Jul 10

We have a Tankmasta tank, chosen because of three factors: ability to colour match to Colourbond colours used in our house, can be placed directly onto a sand bed rather than concrete pad, and can be buried up to 1/3 height, reducing the visual impact on us and our neighbours.

We purchased it from Enviro-Friendly in Phillip, but have to admit that their service levels are wanting. Mainly because of good people and a good business growing too fast for them to cope I think though…

9000L was a good size. Fills with about 40mm of rain (whole house is plumbed to it), and as said is not too imposing when half buried. About 2.3m diameter.
