The 12th Australian Transplant Games will be held in Canberra this year, at the AIS and Floriade. The Transplant Games is about celebrating the gift of organ and tissue donation. Recipients of organs from accross Australia will be heading to Canberra to take part in a variety of sporting events, as will their supporters and the families of those who have donated organs or tissue for transplant. If you are a transplant recipient, or if you life has been touched by organ transplantation then you can register to take part (before August 30th).
Major activities include a Parade at Floriade, Opening Ceremony and public concert featuring Wes Carr, a dedicated “Thank you Garden” designed especially for the Games; Petanque on the lawns around the flower beds. As well as all the standard athletics and team sporting events, you will also find:
- 5km combined community run and race around Lake Burley Griffin
- Mountain biking @ Stromlo Forest Park
- Team Slowpitch Softball and Social “Give-it-a-go” T-Ball
- Demonstration floor-ball
- Health, education and wellness workshops
The athletes are only able to compete (in fact most of them are only alive at all) because someone decided to become an organ donor and, (crucially) made their wishes known.
