ACT Policing are investigating an allegation of fraud involving Gungahlin United Football Club, which has been penalised six competition points by Capital Football for a debt the club racked up last year.
It is understood the club owes a significant amount of money to the football governing body due to an alleged fraud within the club.
ACT Policing confirmed it is investigating the allegations.
The club has failed to meet the payment arrangements for the debt and, as a result, Capital Football has deducted six competition points from its National Premier League Division 1 team in the 2019 season.
In a statement, Capital Football said it was grateful for the openness exhibited by the club committee, and its desire to work with Capital Football to address the club’s financial challenges.
“The decision by Capital Football and agreed to by the club to deduct six points from the NPL first grade team has been made to protect the integrity of the competition, to ensure it is a fair and equitable playing field for all clubs,” the statement read.
Capital Football CEO Phil Brown declined to reveal the amount of money owed, saying it was confidential between Capital Football and the club.

The statement comes on the day the 2019 NPL1 season gets underway, which Brown admitted wasn’t ideal.
“The timing is not ideal,” Brown said. “It has been a process ongoing for a period of time that we have been working with the club on so its good to be able to agree on a solution and a path forward.
“We approached the club about their debt and asked them to have a look at the club’s finances and how they might be able to address it.”
Brown said the outstanding money is still due and the points deduction was not a replacement for the money owed. The CEO declined to reveal the amount of money owed, saying it was confidential between Capital Football and the club.
Gungahlin United president Neil Harlock said the club would now move forward from the issue.
“The new GUFC Executive has worked closely with the Capital Football Board over the past six months to ensure that the financial stability, as well as the future of the Gungahlin football community, is and remains the most important aspect of our club.”
