Canberra has returned to COVID-19 territory once again, as the single remaining active patient was today declared free from the virus.

The ACT has also recorded no new cases of COVID-19 since 10 July.

The ACT now joins Tasmania as the only two states or territories in Australia without an active case of coronavirus.

The number of negative tests in the ACT is now 51,601, while there were a further 858 negative tests in the past 24 hours.

ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman said while it was important to note the achievements and good work of Canberrans in the fight against COVID-19, this was not the time to be complacent.

“Having zero active cases of COVID-19 in the ACT is, of course, good news,” Dr Coleman said. “But it doesn’t mean we can let our guard down.”

“The pandemic is not over and we must remain vigilant. We only need to have a look at what is happening in Victoria and NSW to see how the situation can change quickly.

“Our continued success in the fight against this virus relies on Canberrans maintaining this effort in the weeks and months ahead.”

ACT Health is strongly advising ACT residents not to travel to Greater Sydney at this time unless for absolutely essential reasons.

Canberrans travelling to regional NSW should be aware of the COVID-19 situation in the area they are travelling to, and reassess their need to travel to destinations with known cases.

“We are also reminding Canberrans to exercise caution when travelling, regardless of location. While travelling, it is your responsibility to maintain physical distancing and practice good hygiene, as well as to adhere to the rules of the jurisdiction you are travelling to,” Dr Coleman said.

If you have visited locations identified by NSW Health as having cases of COVID-19, please follow the advice being provided by the New South Wales authorities. The situation in NSW is rapidly evolving and you can keep up to date with the latest NSW Health Advice.

The ACT Government also has a dedicated COVID-19 website for all information about the health and economic response to the pandemic in the ACT.

The ACT Government would also like to remind Canberrans that the existing advice regarding Victoria remains in place – if you have been to Victoria within the past 14 days, you must notify ACT Health before returning to the ACT.
