HMAS Canberra has been decomissioned and is set to be turned into a diving wreck off the coast of Geelong according to this Geelong Advertiser article, if all the funding can be sorted out. The Federales have stepped in and thrown money at the situation, which makes me think they want to look like the good guys in Victoria and hopefully smooth the way for taking over the Murray.

Politics aside, HMAS Canberra should make a great diving wreck in southern waters. Hopefully it’ll be sunk somewhere thats easy to reach and in around 30m of water. Looks like I’ll be taking the ferry from Portsea to Geelong to visit the Canberra on my next Victorian diving trip.

$7m to sink a ship?

Isn’t it funny that the Government’s (almost hysterical) press release which claimed that the Victorian Government was dragging its feet didn’t mention that the ship was decommissioned about 10 years earlier than planned during a round of cost cutting…

Not to mention Jindabyne…

For a brief moment I had this vision of them sinking the whole city.

Well they already did it with a golf course.
