As announced by Jon Stanhope on Friday, the ACT Govt plans to plant one million trees as part of the 2007-2011 climate change action plan. Wow one million trees! Sounds like a lot, eh? Even the Canberra Business Council have jumped on the bandwagon calling for the trees to planted ASAP, fast tracking the delayed arboretum. Meanwhile other tree crusaders have jumped on their own bandwagon asking the govt to focus on the aging urban plantations.
So over the next 5 years we are getting 200,000 trees per year. If this is to account for all the forests destroyed in the fires – including the planting of the arboretum, and the replacement of aging plantations in and around Canberra, then maybe we should demand another million – or two.
