At least I know where NOT to go now … thanks guys. I’ll be stuffed if I want to be having a coffee with the place full of sniffling canines, some of which are not looked after, flea-ridden or begging for food.

Annual leave is not just for holidays. Annual leave is for anything you want. Whether it is a day or a week, as long as its approved, it doesn’t matter. Its just that within the PS you are entitled to other categories of leave under if you meet that criteria.

Oh and we have other leave – which is basically miscellaneous – but annual leave is for holidays.

My boss would say, Im sorry but within your agencies guidelines you have to take berevement leave.

The Issue I was hinting at was that public servants in my department have access to numerous types of leave and that it is not the purpose by definition of my agency of Annual leave to be used to attend matters of an emotional nature, for my reasons stated above. It is berevement leave that is intended for thispurpose.

Once again I can not say that this is government wide, but this is how it is in my agency.

The issue I was hinting at was that public servants have access to numerous types of leave already and that by broadening the scope of the current limitations surrounding the current leave arrangements – it makes a (further) mockery of the public service mentality of entitlement.

Snahons, In my department, due to the operational nature of the work, we can not take annual leave at a whim.

Annual leave has to be planned and booked a month in advance.

I could take annual leave if I knew a month before my dog died, but this may not be the case.

In our department, we are strongly advised to take berevement leave for unforseeable occasions where you are in no emotional state to be at work.

This is so as to justify on paper why we have left on a whim and left the rest of our team in the dirt, and possible compromise to the work we are undertaking at the time.

Granted I have been at my current place of emply for 3 years now and have only had to have 2 days berevement leave.

besides – my understanding of annual leave is intended for extended use to facilitate holidays etx, not for a day off here and there. Thats what Flex is for…. Oh and I have to book that in as well.

Probably not the case across the board, but I can only speak for me and my experiences.

Hence why I think berevement leave should include family pets under its criteria (In my department at least)

Danman, agree 100%. And in fact, in the olden days, I DID use personal leave to take my little man to sydney to have his eye fixed. And no one dared to deny it, or maybe those making the judgement loved their dogs too.

And even if a pet owner is insecure, a show off or just thinks of a pet as a fashion accessory, if they are looking after the pet properly who the hell are you to tell them what they should or shouldn’t be doing.

I have my pets because I love them, not to show the world. I think bereavement leave in the APS should be extended to pet owners (To a point).

I know I would be devastated if one of my “boys” died… because they are family as much as immediate family IMO.

How do you know having your dog with you at a Cafe is about ‘being seen’? Maybe these people just value having their dogs around and like to spoil them a little while they are having a coffee. Seems reasonable to me.

you walk you dog to the shops but don’t stop for coffee. so? i walk my dog to shops and i do stop for a bevvy [on occasions]. i’m bending over, come take me…

i walk my dog because she needs it, i need it (god, do i ever!) and if it coincides with an opportunity to catch up with folks i like to spend time with, she is happy panting at our feet while we drink and natter, and i get her water if she needs it. nothing about ‘being seen’ – just being. try it sometime…

I’m not insecure, infact I’m very liberal. First off, I think pet ownership should not be about ‘being seen’, but about a mutual relationship between human/animal, and secondly, I think that people who use their pets as fashion items should be neutered for the betterment of society.

I realise the natural contradiction in that I own a breed that is purpose bred. I don’t show my dog, and I purchased him because I have always loved the breed, rather than the purpose for which WHT have been bred.

I don’t know Mael. My dog is a near constant companion. I enjoy his company whether its out and about, going on a bike ride or for a run, at work or sitting about drinking beers. He’s definately not a show pony but he sure as hell is better company that a lot of people I know.

I think the consensus falls into two threads here, there’s those who walk their dogs because they like walking their dogs, and then there’s those who want to be seen out, with their dogs.

Just to set the story straight, I generally walk my West Highland White Terrier, Anzac, every night. At no time have I ever considered stopping for a coffee.

I have walked him to the shops, brought beer, and walked home though (yes S4anta, that was your Guinness I’m talking about).

Dont know. But one suspects that it might similar to the good ol’ smoking debate/crying babies. That being;
Some people might just simply prefer to enjoy a day out in the sunshine without strange dogs being near them doing what dogs do, or being fouled up by leashes and other random paraphenalia. personally, provided the pooch hangs under the table and behaves itself I am all for it. That being said the pups in my family stay at home when we are out (unless walking to shops etc) buts that just how we do things.

Mael, its ok to hate dogs, and on occasion their owners, where justified, but do not tar us all with the same brush.

Pets in licensed venue areas, actually contravene ACT Health regulations, and OH&S for workers. Seeing eye dogs (not your ugly mother in law) are a different matter. Not a whinge as to not have them, just explaining why folks.

Why can’t people take their dogs to cafes, especially outdoor ones? The yanks are a lot more civilised about dogs than we are. Over there you’ll see dogs at eateries, shops, you name it. And no one’s dying of the Black Dog Plague or whatever it is. Are toddlers and babies less germ-infested than dogs?!

Oh and next door at Edgars they seem to be dog-friendly too, although they don’t have a specific doggie beer on the menu.

Pulp Kitchen at Ainslie has some kind of meaty item on the menu for your handbag dogs.

OT but at the top of Mt Taylor someone has secured a stainless steel dog bowl to the bench up there so your pooches can have a drink when they get to the top as well. I usually carry a fold up nylon dog bowl but this is a good idea.

There used to be a garden shop in Kippax I think – near old mama rias, they had a coffee shop inside and was dog friendly.

and the post will be one about canine obesity and why isnt the Government doing anything about this insidious development in the ACT populus.
