Two Canberra suburbs will trial a new program designed to connect communities and improve their wellbeing – with up to $40,000 on the table to make it happen.
The ‘My little big idea’ program will be piloted in Richardson and Page, with residents urged to submit their suggestions and then vote to turn their dreams into reality.
Ideas can range from street libraries, fitness or cooking classes, playground, events or a series of activities – all are on the table as long as they promote and foster connectivity across the community.
Once all suggestions have been submitted, a community panel will decide the top three ideas which can then be voted on by everyone.
Ideas won’t be considered if they: exclude people or groups; are not implemented in either Page, Richardson or their surrounding suburbs; use the funds to buy alcohol; have already received other government funding of more than $5000; or propose illegal or offensive activities.
If you don’t have an idea, you can always put your hand up to be part of the community panel.
It’s hoped the ‘My little big idea’ program will involve more community members in ‘neighbourhood democracy’ and assist the ACT Government in learning how Canberrans can help its decision making to further support suburbs.
It will also explore how participatory approaches can be integrated into existing budget consultation processes.
This initiative to encourage neighbourhood democracy is a commitment under the 10th Parliamentary and Governing Agreement.
The winning projects will be funded and implemented in 2024.
