I probably did some of the paperwork authorising that construction. You know we do it just so people can jack hammer you inner urbanites awake first thing on a Sunday morning.

That precise conundrum cost the Dept of Transport (many years ago) a hell of a lot of money in an advertising campaign. Many thousands of A1 posters were printed before it was pointed out that ‘lose’ and ‘loose’ meant diferent things.

Another variation on the thermal clothing – “Silkbody” silk thermals. Not only are they amazingly effective, but the fact that they breathe well means I can wear them to bushwalk with in the summer. Just need an airing after use, and the occasional handwash in lukewarm water.

The catches are that I’ve only ever seen them on sale in one place in Australia; Platypus Outdoors in Melbourne, and they are not cheap, at around $110 a piece for tops and pants.

I find them light and very comfortable, though, and far less itchy than either wool blends or polypropolene.

The upmarket/serious outdoor shops are the go, pretty big thermal-wear brand. You might want to check the insulation in your shoes too… sticking another insole inside might help get you away from what’s conducting the cold in.

I have bad feet and have to wear prescription inserts so no room for anything else, sadly. i will check out these socks though.

Buy the Hike/Crew socks in the brown and green carboard.

Plus if your feet (and probably body) is cold, shout yourself a merino thermal too.

There are various different layers from under layers (like long sleeve longjohns) to mid layers.

At -5 with a merino and a jacket and icebreaker socks i’m toasty in the mornings.

Merino clothes are expensive, but once you have them you will not go back.

polypro thermal gear tends to get a bit whoofy on the nose after a while, even with regular washing.

I too hate Canberra winters but doesn’t mean I hate everything about Canberra. I also just have to suck it up for three months. I’m assuming Comic Nerd meant that the cold weather is the thing about Canberra he hates most but it wasn’t worded the best (although I may be wrong).

Point is you don’t have to love everything about this place to live here.

lol i hate A LOT about canberra, but there are certainly worse places i could be living. ive come to terms with the fact im never leaving so no point complaining.
