Laksa: Sammys Kitchen vs Can Tho

Here’s a blow by blow comparison between Can Tho in Belconnen and (old) Sammy’s Kitchen Laksa in Civic. For those who know the drill, a SK laksa for comparison purposes is a straight 10/10/10.

  • Taste (Flavour) = 9
  • Size = 10
  • Ingredients = 9
  • Decor/Cutlery = 8
  • Waiting Staff = 8
  • Cost = 10

Details

Can Tho is situated in between the Pot Belly and Rubees in Belconnen. I wouldn’t normally consider this as a comparison Laksa – for starters this is comparing Vietnamese to Chinese, but as I have been reassured by a colleague, this is the best laksa you are going to get in Belconnen, so it needs to be considered for sheer convenience value.

The Laksa is not bad at all, but loses points on the chicken being precut into very small cutlets, and is not ‘shredded’ over a hotplate. I considered when I was eating it that the chicken had been simply chucked in with the rest of the ingredients and not prepared specially. Absolutely no consideration has been made in terms of decor, which supports the atypical vietnamese restraunt theme in Canberra, with white plastic tablecloths and white walls to stare at while patiently waiting for food. Overall, since I live in Belconnen I’ll eventually be back, and worthwhile for a try if you are a local and not interested in driving too far to get your laksa fix.

8/10.

@Sammy – human calculation. Since the numbers don’t match up, call it instinct.

@Tylers and Ozchick – coming, coming, on Kippax eateries.

Agreed. Dickson Asian Noodle House. No question. And Aurelius – do you think I even learn?! I hold the napkin up to my face now.

Cheers OzChick, I’ll have to give Lao Thai another go then!

Best Laksa in Canberra is at the Tradies noodle house. During the Super14, nothing beats laksa and watching the rugby – unless they serve their laksa at Canberra Stadium… just hope the bloke sitting behind you in the stands isn’t eating a laksa when the Brumbies score a try…

There is a joint at Kippax shops which serves superb laksa. My choice is always the duck laksa which is some of the best I’ve had. Sorry, I can’t recall the name of the place, but it’s past Aldi towards Southern Cross Drive.

Master So’s Kitchen on Hardwick Crescent (on the ground level of the Parkview Apartments)

It’s ok, the better place for laksa at Kippax is from the Lao Thai Kitchen.

Not too sure about your overall score there. Do you weight individual scores differently?

By my calculations, it should be an overall score of exactly 9.

Combo Laksa @ Dickson Asian Noodle House
The place has the ambience of a food court
But the laksa is to die for
(Warning: not for those wearing white shirts, especially if they’re grots, like me)

Duck Laksa – Thai Gardens – Dickson Chinatown.

Thats all I have to say.

I cannot comment about the service, and I’ve always phone ordered then picked up to take home – but they are really nice owners and the food always excellent. The restaurant itself looks really nice too. I’m sure it would give $ammy’s a run for the money.
