A bit beyond your average mental health day

By toriness - 9 October 2008 15

This guy has really raised the bar in the sickies department – and he’s a local member of the APS!

A Commonwealth public servant’s habit of forging doctors’ certificates to take days off work was only discovered by his bosses after he went too far and faked having lung cancer.

The ACT Magistrates Court heard yesterday that the Department of Education and Workplace Relations became suspicious of its employee Ben Lyons in September 2006 when a concerned colleague tried to visit the 26-year-old’s bedside, only to find that no hospital in Canberra had heard of the man.

The court ordered Lyons to refund more than $3000 in sickness benefits he was paid by the department and he was convicted of three counts of falsely obtaining financial advantage by supplying forged doctors’ certificates.

What’s Your opinion?

Wot a moron. His relationship with his supervisor might have been bad but at least someone took the time out to see if he was orright (much to his chagrin in the end) – wot did he expect the outcome to be?

Faking lung cancer…!!C’mon….its a small town people..yer gonna get caught.

These types give public servants a bad name AND make ’em look stoopid.

He should have had his lawyers name – Toole.. (See Canberra Times article – http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/cancer-faked-in-bid-for-sick-day/1329074.aspx)

Made up family members are just as good. Especially ones who live in Sydney.

If you have to do a cancer one, say a family member has it and you have to go see them.

I’d even avoid that one! Unless you want to temp fate with a family member!

What a tool, it’s peope like him that reinforce the stereotypical view of the APS.

I wanna know why he needed the time off – publc servants only work half the year anyway.

But seriously, that is a big risk to take for only 3 weeks off….
