For those of you who hate parking stories your Christmas present is I’ve been saving them up rather than giving you daily instalments.

And for the vast majority of readers who love this stuff your Christmas present is this post going out at midnight!

Everyone’s a festive winner. Aren’t you happy? You should be!

And now we begin.

1. Someone’s mobile phone sent this in which we thought a bit tame by the high standards of this series:

Driver attempted parking with on a mobile phone glued to her ear.. Note: my park was perfection.. A rare occasion but perfection none the less.. I watched it unfold before my eyes and gave the obligatory tsk tsk shook my head and then whipped out the mobile to take a snap.. She was still in the drivers seat. I hope she saw me.

2. Warming to the theme we have this from Keiran:

Thought you’d like this and others will excuse the hmmm white commodore wagon driver.

Woden Plaza sorry Westfield Woden car park opposite Hoyts.

white commodore

3. Charlie sent in this delight:

Parking Waramanga style

9am Thursday morning. On the median strip. Directly in front of the school crossing. Enjoy.

waramanga

4. Ian was not impressed by the example set by the constabulary in a no stopping zone:

no stopping

5. And saving the best to last Alex sent in this contribution to domestic harmony:

Parking Braddon Style

Not only is it not in the parking spot, it’s also on top of a log barrier.

Well done housemate.

over the barrier

PS notice I can spell and use correctly the word too, this is a word that I reckon 75% of the population get wrong, so simple too.

Excellent spelling. Pity about the grammar.

JC said :

Are you still at it? Umm unlike you I don’t have the time to sit down and memorise every single word in the road rules, there is a thing called a life. Maybe you should go and get one.

Yep, still here, thanks mate. I have a life, thank you, but I appreciate your keen interest.

And I think that you’ve amply demonstrated my point. If you’d read through the Road Rules, even once, you would know the term, “Median strip”, as it’s in there about 50 times. You didn’t know the term, therefore the conclusion is obvious. It’s not a matter of memorising “every single word”, but knowing the rules. How can you be confident that you know them if you’ve never read them?

3. I have admitted I used the wrong word, however I am still 100% right that parking in the middle of the bloody road like those cars were doing is against the law regardless of weather it is a medium or a median. So no idea why you reckon I don’t know the road rules.

Well done – you’ve proved that you know a road rule. However, to be a genuinely good driver you need to know ALL of the road rules. And the only way to do that is to read the Australian Road Rules and to reread them on a regular basis. If you had done so, you would know the word involved, and would not have made such a mistake. It’s simple really.

ummm….you’ve used the wrong word again. Shame on JC for not picking that up!

weather – whether – wether.

(1) Weather refers to temperature, wind, clouds, rain, etc.
(2) Whether is a conjunction with a similar meaning to ‘if’ (e.g., I wonder whether it will rain.)
(3) A wether is a castrated ram (male sheep).

Please refer to post 21. But does my lack of knowledge on these 3 words mean I don’t understand the road rules?

PS did I use the right weather? I am never really sure. The word sounds right, oh a bit like medium and median.

No, if you had spelt it medean, or medien, or mediun that would be a spelling mistake.

Perhaps you would care to enlighten us on your use of indicators on roundabouts, or what ctp insurance covers?

It is still a spelling misake even if the word is the correct spelling for something else.

As for indicators on roundabouts that is something I do right, you know I even know how to give way at a roundabout too and unlike most I know the rule is not give way to the right as most think but giveway to anything already on the roundabout (even if they are on your left). I hold little hope for the future though after seeing a P platter turn right at one the other day. On approach no indicator, however at the point she should have indicated left to exit she must have decided because she was now going in a rightish direction that now was the time she should start to indicate right.

As for CTP there is a thread on the subject, go read it. Oh if you do you might see a post or two from me then decided if I know what CTP is.

Mate – some good advice for you. When you’ve made an error, it’s sometimes best to admit it and not keep digging yourself in deeper. For starters, you clearly have no comprehension of the word “diatribe”, as what I’ve said is in no way a diatribe. I think that what you’ve written falls far more closely within the definition of that particular word.

Secondly, I didn’t accuse you of not comprehending what you read, I accused you of not being familiar with the road rules, and that accusation stands. Nothing that you’ve said has changed that, in fact you seem to be doing your best to confirm it.

If you are going to try to defend yourself, self contradictions make you look silly. You can’t claim (a) that it was a spelling mistake and (b) that it’s a word that you didn’t know; as they contradict each other. Oh, and by claiming that it’s a word that you didn’t know, you’ve admitted to having not read the Road Rules.

1. I am not your mate.

2. It was a spelling mistake that just happened to be the correct spelling of another word. You know when your typing away these things happen. So wrong word, spelling mistake same same in this situation.

3. I have admitted I used the wrong word, however I am still 100% right that parking in the middle of the bloody road like those cars were doing is against the law regardless of weather it is a medium or a median. So no idea why you reckon I don’t know the road rules.

JC said :

Umm I used the wrong word, and by virtue of your diatribe that because I used the wrong word I don’t know the road rules is accusing me of not comprehending what I read, which is plain false. Just because I used the wrong word does not mean to do not understand the bloody road rules. By your argument anyone who sees a word anywhere should be able to remember it and regurgitated the correct spelling at will.

I wouldn’t be so bothered about the park in Number 1 but for the ‘using the mobile while driving’ thing.

As for the police one, don’t see any issue there at all. They can park in a no stopping zone if they need to.

If they need to. Though I’ve seen them park on median strips and in no stopping zones while they go and get their lunch/dinner. I don’t think that’s appropriate.

Maybe not “appropriate” but not illegal. The rule doesn’t say “if appropriate”, it just says authorized vehicles are exempt.

I used to feel the same way but then somebody pointed out what if there was a emergency? Would you prefer they had to run back to the multi story car park and exit via ticket machine?

Exactly. Police need to eat and to be able to move away quickly, so parking near where they get their food seems fine to me. (I don’t want them dealing with emergencies while faint and malnourished any more than I want them to have to run across the lot and mess around with the ticket machine.)

What an absolute and utter load of bulls***. All it shows is I cannot spell, which is something I have known for the last 35 years or so. That doesn’t mean I am unable to read, speak and comprehend English.

So back in ya box and come back when you have something to add in relation to the topic at hand rather than my ability to spell.

Sorry sunshine – nothing to do with your ability to spell. And I didn’t comment on your ability to read, speak or comprehend.

“Median strip” is defined in the Dictionary of the Australian Road Rules, and is used in the various rules probably in the order of 50 times. If you were familiar with the road rules, you simply wouldn’t use “medium” strip to describe the dividing strip in the middle of a road. You did use it, hence your familiarity with the road rules is demonstrably questionable. As I said, that puts you in the majority, so I wouldn’t be too concerned.

My “problem” is that by not knowing such a basic word, you make it clear that you have had virtually no exposure to the road rules – no one who was at all familiar with them would make that error. That puts you well and truly in the majority on Australian roads, so you’re definitely not alone.

The first one isn’t that bad, looks like the difference between being legally parked is the width of the line, seen a lot lot worse.

As for the police one, don’t see any issue there at all. They can park in a no stopping zone if they need to.

As for the cars in the medium strip, yes that is illegal, but what is the who ha about it being “Directly in front of the school crossing.” The picture quite clearly shows the cars are well away from the crossing, so far in fact they are about 20m up on the other side of the intersection that forms the schools driveway so about 50m from the crossing. So yes poor parking, but a tad melodramatic to somehow link that to the crossing.

bundah said :

Everyone of those cars are white, coincidence or a prerequisite for bad parking?

While it’s easy to just say “most cars are white so of course there is a higher chance of a bad park being white”, I’d say that, generally speaking, people who buy white cars aren’t really interested or invested in their cars/drive work cars (which will almost always be white due to it being the cheapest colour). Thus they’ll treat their car as just another appliance, and hence have no real interest or respect in the art of driving, and by extension, parking. So essentially “most people who buy/use white cars don’t give a crap”.

Everyone of those cars are white, coincidence or a prerequisite for bad parking?
