A Christmassy ‘Ask RiotACT!’

I love this time of year, though by this time a lot of us are fed up with Christmas music – usually because we only hear the same few songs over and over again while we shop.
Retail staff must go bonkers!

It’s such a pity we don’t hear a much wider range of the fabulous Christmassy music that is available. For example, I wonder why we don’t hear treasures like the Sussex Carol more often.

(This film, Beatrix Potter’s ‘The Tailor of Gloucester’, has a wonderful Christmassy beginning including carol singers giving a rendition of Sussex Carol. I highly recommend the whole film.)

I had never heard the Sussex Carol until I came across this film when my children were small. It has remained my favourite Christmas Carol ever since, even though it is rarely heard for reasons unknown.

What’s your favourite, and why?

This proved out to be a great playlist for this year 🙂

Be of good cheer…

Wow what a great mix so far!
Charlotte, if by traditional you mean at the classical end of the spectrum, I have an album called ‘A Choirboy’s Christmas’ featuring Anthony Way, who was a famous choirboy in the 1990s when he was on a miniseries called (unsurprisingly) ‘The Choir.’ It is really lovely.
Here’s a sample:

It looks as if it is still available on Amazon. I also rate Kings College Cambridge, I think it’s called Christmas at Kings.
Alternatively you could try Libera, who are a bit more on the Enya end of classical. They are AMAZING and have a Christmas album which can be found on their official website.

Frosty the Snowman and Winter Wonderland by the Cocteau Twins.

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, ‘It’s a Holiday Soul Party’ album is quite good. Picked one up at Landspeed this week.

This a cappella version of The Little Drummer Boy by Pentonix is one of my favourites. Gives me goosebumps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ_MGWio-vc

I would love a recommendation for a compilation of more traditional carols. I bought a couple a few years back and they’re terrible.

Have always enjoyed this one . (Jimmy Barne’s kids do a beauty of this, but canna find it.)

Sleigh Ride – Reliant K – fantastic version of this song
Late Great Snowball Fight – MxPx – cool original song
Things I want – Sum 41 & Tenacious D – for those that like their Xmas carols a little harder
