A contrarian view of Cafe Essen

Local blogger “Pop Goes Canberra” has posted a contrarian view of local institution Cafe Essen.

“You would think that these “alternative” people who “care” so much about humanity etc wouldn’t smoke, wouldn’t you.”

Personally I like a certain genteel scruffiness and don’t mind a bit of sass from the service. I can only hope he/she discovers The Phoenix some time very soon.

Any one so scumfull as to rely on the bus [meaning a) Doesn’t live within walking distance and, b) doesn’t even *know* anyone with a car] really shouldn’t be looking quite so hard down their nose at the rest of humanity IMHO.

(Irony Alert – I think people who catch buses are great and I was one for many years)

The smoke can get a bit thick – and something about the door, windows, aircurrents can blow a fair bit of that smoke into the interior seating. And going with a kid who is a militant anti-smoker is uncomfortable…

On the review side, the food is pretty variable, and seldom above good. The nachos are NOT good – a big negative for me. But a big positive is the plunger coffee – really good and a welcome relief from long blacks.

I’ve never had great service there, but it has never been bad either.

I spent a couple hours there last night playing backgammon.. it seemed ok

i hear you rg – yet another proof that just because someone can setup a blog, doesnt mean they should.

maybe i should start a blog up ?

‘chronicles of the stanley steamer and its tolerant pilot’

I reads that persons whole blog, not bookmark material. In fact, scary in their bold assurance of quality in cultural taste.

I’ve never been there, although someone once insisted that they make the best caesar salad in Canberra. Think I can wait for the weather to get warmer again for that though. Might check it out for a coffee instead.

If she doesnt like cigarette smoke outside she can just fuck off as far as im concerned.

whining besom thinks she should jackboot over all our freedoms.

smoking almost everywhere has been legislated out of existence by the nanny state. sitting in a cold outside cafe chair is of the few places smokers can suck carcinogens in peace.

Ever since Essen changed management and almost all the staff a few years back it’s service went down the shitter. I have barely gone there since as the coffee went watery about the same time as well.

Service staff that make you feel like you are ‘putting them out’ pisses me off no end.

I’ve often seen narky service at essen, it’s almost part of it’s charms. Since the Gypsy closed and I don’t go out as much anymore I have fewer opportunities to be ignored by beautiful alternitive lasses these days. Marriage might have something to do with it as well.

Still enjoy the odd coffee or oversized breakfast there from time to time. I wish I could make more time for the odd earlier morning game of chess too.

Smoking indoors at cafes really annoys me. But I can’t say I’ve ever experienced it at Cafe Esen. I’ve also never experienced bad service there. Maybe the blogger just got unlucky twice in a row.

He’s quite correct about the poofter leftos. And the stinking housos on the buses. Who in their right mind would catch a bus these days???
