A direct approach to a problematic streetlight

Streetlight and gaffer tape

Many of us have endured a streetlight shining in through a bedroom window.

Most of us will get curtains, or plant a hedge, or move the bed to take the light out of our eyeline.

But one intrepid O’Connorite has taken a more direct approach to the offending light with gaffer tape (pictured).

Sure, the already atrocious footpath lighting is further degraded, but a good night’s sleep guaranteed!

An employee of the/a company that looks after Canberra’s streetlights informed me that contractors often do this if a resident complains about the light being too bright.

Good on them. I reckon there is far too much light pollution around. By all means provide some street lighting but it is often overdone. And they should be turned off after midnight to save power.

Why cann’t they just do a Gatso?

I have the exact opposite problem, the street light outside my house in waramanga this is after about a month of seeing streetlights on during the day along the parkway and around the ANU. I’m really glad the lights are when it matters.

It could be the work of ActewAGL themselves, I believe they will try and come up with a solution for things like a bright light if you make complaints. I remember a while back they did something similar to prevent a streetlight in Fadden? from shining into someones house.

Correct, they did it for our neighbours when I live in Macgregor. It stopped the light shining directly into their lounge. One of the problems with this type of street light compared to the ones that direct the light down to the road.

Many streetlights in the inner north had been spray painted when I was growing up. It never caused a problem as the dark bit of the affected footpath was still lit from the reflected light. Spraypainting is a better option than gaffer tape because it is virtually un-noticeable to anyone except people who walk the streets inspecting their local streetlights.

No one is harmed.
It is blocking light coming back into the house. There is still residual light on the footpath. It isn’t permanent.
I don’t see a real problem here

Hmm I’m tempted to do that to the light outside my place.
Yes I do have curtains that block the light. I have other reasons for not wanting the light shining back in towards the unit. Down at the footpath – yes, out on the road – yes, just not back in at the unit. I miss the orange lighting and the inbuilt shades that directed the light where it needed to go. The white ones that spray light every where throw too much up into the sky.

So no chance it’s just a “repair” job?

c’mon gobbo, two square metres of curtain, or two square centimetres of gaffer for a povo student..?

and anyway, this is all overblown, as the streetlights in question rarely give off, at maximum efficacy, more than enough light to entice a moth from two paces, so are unlikely to impede on a night’s slumber…

What’s the flash-point of gaffer tape, and how much does it cost to replace a street light when the original goes up in flames?

Priorities, Sammy! How much does it cost to keep a worker off sick or on stress leave just for the sake of a light we don’t need?

Will the intrepid O’Connorite be paying for any compensation claims that are lodged should that area be too dark to safely walk through at nihgt?

Honestly!

Is it THAT difficult to get yourself a set of bloody black-out curtains? It will help with saving energy as well.
