The ARU has announced that they’ve got a sponsor for the Australian Rugby Championship which will be played for the Mazda Cup.

I’ve also seen a copy of the draw, which has the following home games:

2.30pm Sat 11 Aug v. Melbourne Rebels (Manuka Oval)
2.30pm Sat 26 Aug v. Ballymore Tonadoes (Manuka Oval)
2.30pm Sun 9 Sep v. Sydney Fleet (at Canberra Stadium!)
2.30pm Sun 16 Sep v. Central Coast Rays (Manuka Oval)

I found out that the games are at Manuka as Vikings Park does not have good enough TV facilities.

AFL Canberra Grand Final is on at Manuka on 9 September which is why the other game was moved to Bruce Stadium. And they don’t expect the crowds to be big enough to jusify the expense of Bruce for the other matches…

CFMEU naming rights sponsors doesn’t bother me any more – at least the $ lost in the slow learners center (pokies) is going into something I support!

could be worse mr g ferret, ford fairlane and the cmfeu could be naming spnsors

I bet the Vikings Club are screaming its at Manuka, all that lost pokies money

there is one game at Bruce on Sunday 9 Sep vs Sydney Fleet

games are supposed to be shown on ABC and ABC2

> Were the 15000 just the season ticket holders seeking value for money for their $200+ 6 game tickets and corporate binge drinkers taking advantage of someone elses largesse?

No, no they weren’t. They don’t actually have that many members + corporate box punters. I’m not a season ticket holder, still went along to 3 games.

The team name has been announced: Vikings.

No logo yet though.

I notice that the ACT Team name has yet to be announced. Can someone bring a touch of history to the comp and call it the Canberra Kookaburras? They can play in predominantly black and white with a yellow and blue stripe across the midriff and sleeves…

IIRC the ARU is actually paying the ABC to show two games a week.

I’m pretty certain that it’s going to be on ABC, which is great! (although I have Fox in any case)

Anyone know which TV station has picked up the telecast rights? … or are they going to let it go to pay TV like the Super 12?

They hardly “all went missing”. They still had crowds averaging over 15000 for the season. There’s no other team in Canberra that could (perhaps ever even) claim that.

Anyway….yes, agreed. Bruce &/or Vikings Park would be preferable & I understand what you mean about the teams.

Canberra has many thousands of Rugby fans – who all went missing at Brumbies games when they started playing rubbish boring football…

NPC – Melbourne Rebels, Ballymore Tornados. WTF? There is no heritage to this comp, its a hotch potch. If the ARU were serious, it would have been the best 4 club sides from Sydney, Brisbane, the Vikings and one from Perth – not make up teams from nowhere.

My point it – Manuka Oval is round. Bruce Stadium was reconfigured at great expense. Why not use it. Vikings Park is the best surface in Canberra. Why not use it?

Hahaha…you’re funny Ferret. I think you’ll find there are PLENTY of interested punters for this “half baked half assed” comp. It’s something Rugby fans have been crying out to have for a long time….& in case you haven’t noticed, Canberra has many thousands of Rugby fans. Certainly a lot more than are interested in local Aussie Rules finals, that’s for certain.

Why the hell is rugby at Manuka anyway? Its AFL Canberra finals time, surely they could play this half baked half assed joke of a competition at Vikings Park or Bruce Stadium…

Or I suspect you could fit the interested crowd in to Phillip District Oval to be honest
