Hi all,

Looking for a friendly and understanding tax agent. My paperwork-hating other half is scarred after salvaging what’s left of previous years’ tax stuff from floods and wrongly trusted an agent from a big chain in Civic last EOFY who then decided to stop practising and closed down the office without telling anyone!!

Please post any recommendations/spruik your wares – thanks in advance!

I used to do it myself with E-tax. one year it told me I owe $500, I tried a bunch of variations. in the end I saw Bill and he got me $2k back! It’s been a pretty steady return since then.

Hello,
If you are looking for an agent we are currently taking on clients.
http://www.wfscanberra.com.au/
We are located in Dickson and have a full price basic individual option, or if you want to fill in our individual schedule and don’t want an appointment we offer a discounted rate.

Given the tone of the post I’m assuming you would prefer a sit- down chat. So the discounted option might not be what you are looking for.
If you are after more then just a tax return we can also help you in other financial areas.

We are also trying to give twitter a go, so if you have any basic tax questions you would like answered you can get us through there – @wfscanberraaus
Good luck with your search!

They offer an online service and if you would prefer a face to face meeting in Canberra this can be arranged also

If your setup really does require an agent’s help (eg small business) I’ve found Paul Clark very good. He’s in Barton.

Seconding ‘e-tax if your taxes are straightforward’. It’s really easy. Plus after you’ve done it once, you can key in a passcode-thingy and all your basic details (name, age, address, TFN etc) will be pre-filled in each subsequent tax return.

They don’t have a mac version, though, which is pretty annoying.

After being scarred myself, way back in the early nineties, I got my tax done every year professionally. The last two years I have downloaded the ATO’s e-tax pack. It’s brilliant. Rather than pay someone to use software with skip logic, I just use the software myself. There’s help built-in (for those questions with 5 sub-clauses) and clear definitions. If your taxes are horrendous then perhaps it’s not the best option, but if you have fairly typical deductions and income sources, it may be worth a look.
