Million Paws Walk 2009 seemed to this observer to be the most successful to date. Attendance was high and the RSPCA crew managed the crowd well, ensuring that a fun day out was had with minimal drama. My dogs were left at home today as they like to believe they are the only dogs in existence, but plenty of other pooches appeared to be enjoying the sunshine and the entertainment on offer.

I know that most of the RSPCA staff there will be straight back into work at the shelter tomorrow morning – their dedication is to be admired. I hope the day raised plenty of money to support their work as I am sure they, as an animal charity, are feeling the pinch of the economic downturn on peoples’ capacity to donate.

UPDATED: The RSPCA is claiming victory with a record turnout in Canberra:

Thank you to the 9,000+ pet lovers who came together at Stage 88 with around 3,500 dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds. From the smallest Chihuahua to the tallest Great Dane, it seems that all of the pooches and their families had a thoroughly enjoyable day out by the lake.

bahaha! re homosapien cull.

I think most dog owners would be in favour of the roo cull, as it will result in a surplus of fresh and cheap dog food on the market.

BTW – I LOL at the bit about kangaroos dying in sympathy for their fallen mates (stress induced myopathy). Can you please add a link for a reliable source of the kangaroo PSD, otherwise I’ll just have to laugh myself to sleep this evening 😀

Maybe the Govt should send in counsellors to help Kangaroos through this difficult time?

Personally, I think the Govt should be a bit more honest about all this: I mean, if it is alright to cull Roos because they are damaging fragile eco-systems, well when are they going to have a Homosapien cull?

It really irritates me when the RSPCA gets dragged into issues over which it has no control. Its role in kangaroo culling is to ensure it is conducted humanely – it has no power to influence the decision. It also focuses on ALL creatures, so has to consider the real risks to other native species as a result of kangaroo over-population as well as the well-being of the kangaroos themselves. What it shouldn’t have to worry about is bleeding heart, uninformed bullies who take a completely blinkered view of an already difficult situation. I know of hard working RSPCA ACT staff and volunteers who have been abused for “not stopping” the cull last year. Let the RSPCA ACT do the job they are there to do and take up complaints with the people who make the decisions.

Can I get flame of the week for that one, Ed?

A great day out for dogs

and it was good to see these kangaroo fact flyers being taken by so many… http://members.tip.net.au/~mos/roo.pdf

Alternatively, a tiger on a segway, why the hell not?

For a kids activity I think – I saw a flyer with a tiger on it

its a tiger on a segway – anyone know why?

Awesome day – well done RSPCA

It was a fantastic day and couldn’t have asked for better weather. I couldn’t believe how many pugs where there.
