Does anyone have any recent information on Canberra’s attempts to get an A-League team? I am one of the “foundation members” who payed $200 and I assume some of you are also?

The bid page http://www.a-league4canberra.com.au/ no longer seems to work, is there a new website I am not aware of? I have not received any emails recently either.

Happy for my $200 to be retained for the cause as I would love a local football team, just wondering if this has turned into a Nigerian scam…

UPDATE: We’ve had the below in from the A-League bid to clear things up:

The website went down because the domain registration had lapsed, we have now renewed the domain and in the process of getting the website back up.

The funds are held in trust under a trust deed with SOMB and is currently earning good interest in a term deposit. Under the terms of the trust deed the funds are to be used for a new Canberra team, if the trustees deem that there is no chance of a team up until 30/12/2012 the money will be refunded. This trigger point has not been reached yet.

We intend to formally write to the FFA to determine what our prospects are like.

There’s no reason a Canberra A-League franchise can’t succeed. If League or Union can do it then Football can do it. It seems to always be assumed that if one will fail it will be football. It’s the biggest sport in town, it’s growing more than ever, and has infinitely more international value than the other codes. The old Cosmos were a poorly run under-funded team in a poorly run league. Their failure has no bearing on the strength of the football community in Canberra.

WE WILL RULE THEM ALL!!!

The interest gained will be returned to the Canberra soccer community , Nigerian scam let’s not get silly.

Out of interest, if the bid fails, what happens to these years of ‘good interest’? Will supporters receive their $200 back or will they receive the interest as well? If they dont get the interest, who does.. the ‘trustees’? This is starting to sound just a little like a nigerian scam, except that you get your original payment back after those involved have made 20% off it.

So I was only a youngster during the crash of the majority of canberras big sporting teams so if I missed something feel free to correct me.
But if we couldn’t afford to maintain soccer, basketball, union, cricket and league before why would doing it now be any different?
Soccer is like a Yoyo, A Fad. We had it, we lost it, we got over it and now we want it again. So we can run it into the ground again?
Canberra struggles to hold onto the raiders so wouldn’t adding another major sporting team just make it worse for all?

Next time maybe you should head down to the casino put your $200 on black.
Or I’ll drink it away for you?!

I also paid my $200 for the foundation membership and have been pondering the ominous silence from the bid team. Like the original poster, I’m not looking for a refund – more than happy for my $200 to stay with the bid as long as they are going to eventually do something worthwhile with it.

It would be nice to get the occasional update from them though – even if it is to report that nothing is currently happening.

If the A-League bid is dead and buried for the moment as it seems, perhaps the money collected could go towards funding a National Youth League side from Canberra. At least that would provide some sort of career path for talented local footballers – of which Canberra manages to produce more than its fair share.

Thanks for that link Swaggie!

We’re just waiting and hoping at the moment….

But there is no place for those that have payed there $200 to be kept up to date??

Ask Steve Doszpot

The FFA said last year that “we do believe Canberra is the right choice for the next A-League licence”… but who knows how many years it is until that spot opens up.

It is dead and buried with the admission of another Sydney team
