A long lingering look at the Canberra

The Navy has very kindly posted a lengthy look at the NUSHIP Canberra as she nears completion at Williamstown:

This video gives a good look around the Nuship Canberra at its current state of completion. Nuship Canberra is the first of the Landing Helicopter Dock ships and is currently under construction at the BAE Systems Williamstown Shipyard at Port Phillip Bay. The ship is due to commence sea trials in late 2013.

What does NU stand for?

NU pretty much stands for “new”. She’s a new ship, and hasn’t yet been commissioned into service. When she’s accepted and commissioned, she’ll transition from NUSHIP Canberra to HMAS Canberra.

In a similar vein, NUSQN-808 down at Nowra is a new RAN helicopter squadron that is in the process of setting our new MRH-90 choppers to work.

Certainly a striking looking ship indeed with those great slab sides.
To realy represent Canberra itshould have some graffiti on them.

Or public art…

They seem to have a lot fitted out already, good presentation – thanks RAN.

Should the navy have room for us we would be VERY happy to run RiotACT from the Canberra in one of the shakedown cruises!

Yep, an RA should get a tour!

Due to having some contacts in the industry I’m (hopefully) going to be going on a tour through the Canberra next month. I’m so excited that I’ve been squealing with glee like a little girl. I promise to provide pics to RA if it all comes off…

Knowing what I know about you big fella, thought of you squealing fills me with dread… 🙂

Very impressive. I would seriously choose this over Princess cruises any day. I think JB and Barcham should include this in their Mobile Office Reviews.

That was interesting, thanks JB.
Do any of our existing ships have the landing barge capability of the Canberra? Is it a common ability across navies?

The Italians tried it with the Costa Concordia.

What happens if there are two NUSHIPs at the same time?

That was interesting, thanks JB.

HMAS Choules, formerly HMS Largs Bay has the floating dock.

The British. French, and Americans have them it for a long time. (It was crucial to the Falklands).

The Russians are working on getting it now and of course we bought these ships from the Spanish.

Intriguingly the new American LHDs aren’t bothering with it anymore, choosing to lift everything with helicopters.

For projecting the army it’s very useful, but wait to see what we do with that ski ramp on the front of the flight deck this video neglected to mention.
