The suburb of Forde all the way up in Gungahlin was named after Francis Forde, former Prime Minister of Australia. Forde held the top job for about a week after John Curtin died, with Ben Chifley taking over soon after. I really appreciate the fact that Forde is placed quite close to the suburb of Harrison. (Harrison Ford, get it?) This suburb is also fairly new with a gazettal date of 27 July 1992. Back in 2013, Forde was listed as the ‘most advantaged’ ACT suburb.
Forde is one of the northernmost suburbs in the ACT, and I had the idea in my head that it was a new housing estate and expected a lot of it to be under construction. I couldn’t have been more wrong. While it is new, it is quite established as far as houses are concerned. It’s also really, really clean and tidy and the majority of the houses have the most beautiful front gardens – I was actually impressed at how much effort people put into making their gardens look amazing.
Forde has a local shops which includes a supermarket, pharmacy, hairdresser, and a cool little café called Frankies at Forde. While the shops weren’t exactly bustling when I was there, Frankies had a fair few people dining inside and outside and it looks like a really popular place to catch up for a meal. Will put Frankies on my Canberra food bucket list!
One thing I do really like about Forde is how close to nature it is. There’s beautiful countryside views, as well as a couple of little wetland areas with an abundance of cute ducks (remember not to feed ducks bread, but rather frozen peas, lettuce or grapes cut in half). The picnic potential here is strong!
Forde unsurprisingly is a cat containment suburb which means that all pet cats must be kept inside at all times (unless in a secure outdoor enclosure/cat run or on a leash). Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary is nearby which provides a safe haven for our native wildlife as all invasive species have been removed from this area. The Sanctuary is open to the public and you can even book an evening tour. There is also opportunity to volunteer at the Sanctuary, assisting in conservation efforts based on what time of year and which area of the Sanctuary you’re in. Visit the Mulligans Flat website for more information.
Last Christmas, Forde really got into the decorating sprit with some huge displays spanning over several houses. The highlights were 7 & 9 Huddy Street, and 6 & 8 Helen Leonard Crescent. I’ll be sure to check out Forde again this year to see if they’ve topped their previous efforts!
