A new name for the ANU Bar?

Having for years given away their student market to the private sector thanks to mismanagement, petty politics, being crap, and tearing down what could have been a world class selection of band posters, the ANU Bar is trying to get back in the game.

They’re now calling for suggestions for a new name so they can get some brand distance from the Uni Pub up on University Avenue.

ANU union chair Ben Duggan said the competition gave student’s the chance to name the popular venue.

“Combined with last year’s refurbishments, it’s hoped that a new name will improve the overall vibe of the location and make it a more attractive venue for students,” said Ben.

“A number of students have complained to me that ANU Bar is a dull name. So I thought the union board should allow students to decide what name it should take on,” he said.

Ben added that some names that have already been suggested, including the ‘Kirby Bar’ after retired Justice Michael Kirby, and ‘The Whitlam’ or ‘the Hawkes Nest’ after former prime ministers Gough Whitlam and Bob Hawke.

“Naming the bar after an Australian icon would give the place a bit of character and make it more memorable,” said Ben.

Apparently all Australian icons are either gay or Labor Prime Ministers.

If you’ve got a better suggestion you can email it to union.chair@anu.edu.au , but post it in the comments first.

Back in prehistoric times, when I was on the Union Board, we used to serve a stew in the Refectory called ‘Oliver Twist’ stew, known as “Ollie’. You could bring back your bowl and say ‘please sir (or Maria), I want some more. It was lamb or beef (whatever was cheapest) plus carrots, onions and whatever else was cheap at the markets.

Many of our ‘movers and shakers’ dined on Ollie.

Why not just call it the Refectory like it used to be? Or was that the cafeteria bit?

I thought it was the Refectory too. At least thats what I told my Mum it was, when I went there under-age to see the Choirboys, so she wouldn’t think I was going to an actual pub. Aaah the olden days.

He he yes,the Refectory that churns up some memories of a time when the bar had a weekly pool night and local & international bands played and the other drink spot of any worth was the cock’n’bull……………

I will be paying my first visit to the ANU bar in a couple of months, why?

Former Stranglers front man Hugh Cornwell will tour Australia in April this year. The show will feature two sets – the first will feature a collection of Stranglers hits and classic solo material, with the second featuring The Stranglers seminal debut album ‘Rattus Norvegicus IV’ being performed in its entirety for the first time in Australia.

Oh Pommy Bastard, you Pommy Bastard! My envy knows no bound! The Stranglers provided a great part of the musical background to my youth, but I will be flying overseas on the 27th.

At least on the way out, for one brief second I will be 60 feet above the ground, just hangin’ around…

The ANU Union students are typically far from the smartest students at ANU. More concerned with how many friends they have on Facebook and how many posters they have their name and face on. It’s unsurprising then that the same people who think an election is based on handing out free candy think that the fundamentally poor design, layout and service the ANU Bar offers can all be glossed over with a new name.

I particularly like how most of the reps speak of having to “sacrifice high marks” so that they can do this important work.

Is the ANU bar a drinking hole, a casual cafe, a music venue? It seems to have no aim. The layout of a sushi bar with the decor of an Irish pub alone demonstrates this.

It was always a terrible bar, soul-less, charmless, and very badly run. There used to be a little bar with food around the back called Knotholes, and it was heaps better, but they got rid of it.

Or just call it Lectures.
“sorry mum/dad, I can’t talk now, i’ve got to get to Lectures.”

Does that fat old twat with the 70’s tash, mullet and Forestry Department rugby top (even though he was never enrolled) still hang out there poncing about with his made up martial art?

Rebranding – the last refuge of the desperate.

I was on the Union Board many years ago, and even remember the Bar (it was just called The Bar, everyone knew what it meant) in what is now the Chancellery. We made money like gangbusters. I haven’t been there for years, but have to wonder how they have stuffed it up to the extent that they can’t make money with a captive market of thousands in walking distance.

IIRC, our main selling points were cheap booze, quick service, and being able to buy (inside) and smoke (outside) reasonably priced dope. Plus, a cast of regulars worthy of a Hunter S Thompson novel. I’m guessing most or all of the above no longer apply. If so, a new name isn’t going to make any difference.

Given that the bar’s just about only claim to fame is that Nirvana played there, just call it Nirvana.

I bet it will end up being called something like ‘Sullies’

yeah, because Liberal PM’s would be stoked to have their name affiliated with a University union building.

Canberra’s University National Tavern.

… or just “The Dump”?

How about the ANZ Bar? Lucrative sponsorship possibilites but not so far removed from the original name that people will get confused.

eh, what a terrible idea. People dont avoid anu bar because of its name, they avoid it because there are crap deals. What anu bar should do is advertise to the colleges/Residents Association and try and organise events to be held there. It *could* be a great place the meet up and have pre-drinks before a night out (considering its equidistant from all the colleges)

Personally, i like sitting outside (its a nice place to have a beer), but everyone goes out to smoke.

The “At Least It’s Close” bar?

The “Have A Couple Here And Then Move On” bar?

The “Round The Corner From The Food Shops” bar?

The “Bar With No Atmosphere” bar?

The “Chick Will Rauf On Your Arm Whilst Attempting Difficult Pool Shot” bar?

How about another Canberra icon – the much-admired sheep sculpture in Civic.

“The Iron Ewe Bar” has a nice sound to it.

“Sticky Carpets”

Someone in Woroni had a decent suggestion – The Ian Chubb – ie, I’m going to have a pig’s ear at the Ian Chubb. Imagine the rhyming slang possibilities!
