A new park in Whitlam has been officially opened by Minister for Housing and Suburban Development Yvette Berry.

The park, named Blue Poles Park, is so named to celebrate the purchase of the famous Jackson Pollock painting in 1972 by then prime minister Gough Whitlam, and follows the arts and culture theme for the Whitlam suburb.

Minster Berry said that the park was a starting point for creating a new and welcoming suburb in Canberra.

“We want to make this more than just infrastructure, concrete, and playgrounds, we want to turn Whitlam into a place that people really want to live and somewhere people can thrive,” she said.

“Recreational areas in a suburb create a vital meeting point for the community. The new park will certainly be a place to connect and stay for extended play.”

Blue Poles Park will contain new sustainable features that Minister Berry said would be important elements for teaching future generations about sustainability.

“This has been something the Suburban Parks Agency has been really keen on implementing because we want to educate future generations about sustainability and how it can be implemented in every part of our life,” she said.

“Once the water play area has been used all that water is recycled and used to water the plants and trees in the garden which is a great step forward in terms of sustainability and making sure we’re climate ready.”

The water play area accompanies a variety of native plant species that have been planted around the park.

Minister Berry said that sustainable features would be implemented in future parks.

“Sustainable features are something that we would like to implement more and something that the Suburban Land Agency has been really keen on implementing,” she said.

Currently, Whitlam holds no skate-accessible spaces though Minister Berry has said that a new skatepark has been discussed and could be an option for future parks in Whitlam.

The lesson to be learned here is how to sustain a tree. The hypocracy of ACT government policies ranging from transport to housing and their associated mass removal of trees, leaves me breathless when that same government opens a park in a cleared area urges us to live sustainably.
