A new recruit for the Alexander Maconochie Resort

gunplay

Three shining lights of Canberra have been dispensed with for a period of time, unfortunately not long enough, for their spree of armed burglaries.

The leading luminary of the trio, William John Callan, 19, was caught in part due to his posing on his unsecured Facebook page, showing him posing next to the revolver used in a robbery.

Once again however the courts feel that these low lifes don’t need to take responsibility for their actions.

“Supreme Court Justice John Burns sentenced Callan to five years jail, but he will be eligible for parole in June 2014. In sentencing Callan, Justice Burns noted the boy’s good criminal record, his guilty plea, and the continuing support from his family. He said Callan had ”reasonable prospects” for rehabilitation.”

A couple of points on Justice Burn’s observations :

‘the boy’ : umm…he’s actually a man.

‘Good criminal record’ : I suppose we can interpret that in a couple of ways.

‘his guilty plea’: umm…he was caught red-handed breaking into the Burns Club by a police sting.

‘ the continuing support from his family’: let’s hope this acorn fell a long way from the tree.

‘reasonable prospects for rehabilitation’: read – this will be a name to watch for years to come.

Oh well, at least the good citizens of Canberra can now sleep secure for a couple of years whilst Mr Callan enjoys the arduous life inside a Canberra prison…sorry, we’re not allowed to call it a prison – that would upset the residents too much…the Alexander Maconochie Centre.

UPDATE 07/10/12 16:46: Thanks to babyface for pointing us at the photo.

+1. I think anyone who can come up with circumstances where rape is justifiable, humorous or deserved, is one small step away from being a perpetrator themselves.

No one fantasising about it, just a fa t of prison life.
Still, funny and he clearly does deserve it.

you think rape is funny and deserved? Wow, just wow.

When its done to scumbag criminals? Sure.

stuffed up the quotes there *sigh* what I was trying to do was point out that *you* did say that rape would be deserved and funny. How you could then post that no-one is saying it should happen astounds me. Actually, what astounds me is that anyone could think that rape could be funny or deserved.

As I had previously posted, people who can find ways to justify rape are not far removed from those that would commit it.

Saying those things takes you down to his level. No body deserves to be raped and it’s sickening that people would even have that thought cross their mind. He is only 19 years old and the Judge has more experience with these kinds of situations than any of you and would not have given him a 2 year parole period if he/she didn’t think Will would be rehabilitated. No innocent person simply doing their job deserves to be held up either. Think about things from the side of the victims here. They might have all manner of flashbacks and stress resulting in damages to future career prospects or their own lives and family relationships.

He is not only 19 years old. He is an adult in the eyes of the law and all things adult – eg voting, driving, gaining meaningful employment and making a positive contribution to the community. He chose to do what he did and it’s hardly a 10 yo kid making a stupid mistake. He made a conscious decision to rob the burns club. Whether the gun was real or fake is by the by. If you were the poor suck looking into the barrel end of it you were still probably shitting yourself.

Just fyi, in the eyes of the law, an imitation or replica is still classified as an offensive weapon.

The old “it’s okay, just a fake gun” excuse doesn’t flow well with a magistrate

Please, just stop with all the rape talk. It’s not appropriate, clever or amusing in any way.

I’m glad this kid was caught and is being punished for his diabolical actions. I only hope his stint at AMC sees him set on the right path in life.

I don’t think anyone said he should be raped, I just pointed out the facts that he is a pretty young thing and rape is something that happens when bunches of scumbags with no morals or self control are locked up together.

I guess the fact that he probably will be copping a few penises inside him is a distressing thought to his family, but really, only he put himself in that situation now didn’t he?

Yeah, that’s pretty terrible stuff. I’m no fan of the “rape in jail is a great idea” proposition.

But God imagine if you’re an on old bloke like me and your quiet, gentle and studious young daughter who works as a checkout operator at a shop, as my daughter does, was confronted by three masked maniacs with a gun and knives and cleavers, and they threatened to shoot her and chop her into bloody little pieces and kill her so that she would be so terrified that she would readily hand over the money in her till without causing any problems.

When that happened then maybe you’d feel a bit of righteous goddam rage, as I did when I read about this, and maybe you’d write some intemperate things on an internet blog. It’s sad that his family are upset that mean things are being said about him on the internet. It’s even sadder though, that the victims of his crimes are probably jolting awake in the night in a cold sweat, if they can sleep at all.

To paraphrase your words, nobody deserves to undergo such an assault, and it’s sickening that people would even have the thought of doing so cross their minds.

I don’t want him to be raped in jail. But I also don’t want to cross his path, or that of his arsehole mates anytime soon either. The longer he spends in the slammer the happier I’ll be.

AnneHann said :

After this case I have learnt that you can certainly not believe everything you read in the media.
Yes, I agree regardless of fake or real, the trauma is the same.
And yes I was there when the photograph was taken.

Fair enough then. It’s a fake/replica/toy firearm. As we both seem to agree, that doesn’t make its use in an armed robbery significantly less serious from the point of view of the victims.

But what should we not believe that we read in the media? What I’ve gathered is that this bloke and his mates went around robbing people on a number of occasions while armed with a variety of serious weapons. They were prepared to take down the Burns club while armed and masked and equipped with gear for securing anyone on the premises, which is simply nauseating. In my eyes this isn’t too complicated and these blokes don’t seem like Tinkerbelle and her band of merry pixies heading out for a bit of cheerful frolicking down at Dingley Dell.

If I have the wrong impression, and you have a different perspective on the facts then I’d like to hear what you have to say.

OK, sure. But how do you know that to be the case? The linked CT article describes it as a “gun” and a “revolver” and describes the multiple robberies as “armed”. Admittedly, they were also armed with knives, hatchets and cleavers, but I don’t see any mention of “fake”, ‘toy” or “replica” when talking about that gun.

So I’m quite happy to believe that it’s not the genuine article, but how do you know? Were you there when the photo was taken?

And as Henry82 points out, if it’s pointed at you during a robbery and you believe it to be real then the trauma is pretty much the same.

There is a difference between toy gun and replica. One is illegal and the other is not.

Ok, I’ll join in the stooping low.
This guy is clearly grooming his tough guy wigga image.
Yet, according to his Facebook page, after a hard day of gang work he settles down to watch a bit of Sex in The City and Gossip Girl. Just lucky AMC has those big LCDs!

The image is too grainy but i reckon given he’s hired a cop uniform it’s more likely to be a toy gun or possibly a replica.

Could be. I’ve never been interested in replicas, but I believe they’re illegal in the ACT and most other jurisdictions so it’d be difficult to hire one.

Anyway, even if the gun was a fake, they still had their knives, hatchet and meat cleaver to fall back on, which is more than enough justification for locking them up for a long time.

The thing that makes me sick is the cable ties they took to the Burns club. That detail means that this wasn’t a sneaky burg on an empty premises. And it wasn’t a quick dash in and out of a shop to get the contents of a till. They expected to encounter staff on premises, and they planned to assault those people, overwhelm them and secure them. Situations like that can turn pear shaped very quickly and the psychological trauma for the victims of such an incident can last a lifetime.

The three of them seem like nasty little vermin. I doubt that this is the last we’ll hear of them.

Is it a real gun? No way I could smile like that muppet with a gun pointed at my head, even if I had just cleared it myself. Especially if it is being held by a drunk retard.

I know nothing of these things, but even given the poor quality photo, it looks like a real gun to me. And the CT report refers to robbery with a gun, not an imitation or replica gun

It looks like a blued, heavy service revolver with an unvented rib and an underlug on the barrel. It’s hard to tell, but it also looks like the foresight is recessed a little back from the muzzle, and the underlug slants backwards away from the muzzle crown.

So, I’m voting for a Ruger GP-100. If I’m right then that’s a very powerful weapon.

These men went into workplaces armed with a gun, knives, a hatchet and a meat cleaver. They had cable ties to secure the people they presumed would be on the premises at the Burns club. One would have to assume that they were prepared to use their weapons to threaten and kill people if necessary in order to satisfy their desires.

But the head banana of this bunch will be eligible for parole in June 2014. Another one gets out in December, and the third has already walked back onto the street.

Prison time should involve rehabilitation, but there should also be an element of punishment, and a further element of simply removing scum like this from society in order to protect everybody else.

Exactly why I would lol out loud at the thought of him sucking man meat while in gaol. Pathetic sentence for a serious crime.

Given the guy holding the gun appears to be dressed a bit like a Metropolitan Police officer (even going for the Metvest look), it should probably be a Webley if he wants to be historically accurate.

The descent of this thread into the gutter makes me realise yet again why social media is so problematic in giving oxygen to those who can’t carry on a reasonable conversation.

How does that compare with other prisons?

I would also suggest that you pretty much have to be a hardened habitual re-offender before you get sent to the AMC anyway, so it is hardly surprising.

Perhaps you are right that if you are sent to AMC you already have low chances of rehabilitation, which is evidenced by the disparity in recidivism rates between the two justice streams, but I think we could do better.

Mongrel dogs. Savage and stupid, and certainly dangerous enough to kill some unsuspecting checkout operator. Vain and boastful with it, too. What a package. I wonder what they would’ve done with the cable ties at the Burns club if they hadn’t been caught?

On the farms I was familiar with as a youngster, if one of the working dogs turned out to be savage and stupid and dangerous then you’d just shrug and shoot it.

Some douche gets stabby on two people:

Chief Justice Higgins said the attack was ”out of character” for Flowers, pointing to his relatively clean criminal record.

Relatively clean criminal record…so not a clean record then

The douche has been kicked out of a rehab facility so terry orders him to go back, are they under any obligation to take him back its not even in terry’s jurisdiction.

If brains was electricity, he’d be a walking blackout…

Posing on f’book with a key piece of evidence? Hmm yet another bright spark, who not content with his haul, apparently wanted notoriety without considering the consequences. He’s going to need to lift his game if he wants to emulate Mully,or Paul Lill who reportedly broke into well over a hundred homes in a three month period to feed his heroin habit in mid 2000.
