A place at the Coast

For the second time in three weeks i’m heading down to the NSW south coast this afternoon and while this might not seem strange for some, for me its a bit of an anomaly. I’ve been there more times in the last month than i have in the last three years. For many other Canberrans however the weekend pilgrimage to the coast is a family tradition & although i cannot find any statistics online on how many of us migrate there as the weather warms, the sheer number of ACT licence plates that line the streets of Batemans Bay and other seaside towns indicates that it’s a lot.

My question then, to those that regularly join the exodus to little canberra is : Where is your favorite spot on the coast? And, what makes it so great?

I love Congo! It has everything. Except for the Pickled Octopus restaraunt which is over in Tuross.

Another great beach you might wanna check out is a little beach next to Binji (just south of it). It is a small beach enclosed by steep walls of rock, with a lot of nooks and crannies to explore.

sorry gm, we love the coast just as much as you do!

The only problem, gm, is that us ugly, rude people put a huge boost into your economy.

Hate to admit it, but I have to agree with gm. Bad drivers? Certainly. Rude? I reckon. Ugly? Does a bear shit in the woods? (And fat too, gm). Think I’m going to move away from this dump.

Yogis (Canberrans) shouldn’t be allowed on the SC (Or even out of the ACT). They’re bad drivers and rude to the locals. They congest the roads, steal our clothes from our clotheslines, drink too much grog and are UGLY. Stay away from my beautiful home

NSW south coast is a paradise, I just wish (1) the roads between here and there were improved and (2) a tunnel through the clyde was made (I’d pay a toll!). There’s alot of traffic in holiday season/long weekends, but I could see alot of people moving down there and doing a commute…

Congo (nr. Moruya).

Wierd & wonderful.

Yeah, I really doubt you’d find 72 virgins anywhere near Broulee, so it’s strictly BYO.

But it’s the most beautiful beach on the coast… at least as far as swimmable beaches go. There are some really nice ones in the national parks but usually they’re in dangerous coves full of bluebottles. Dark Beach near Durras for example – really cool black and white pebbly sand but lots of seaweed, choppy surf and lots of rocks.

Broulee is my favourite.

i’m not telling you – and that is what makes it the best! (actually, as a couple have already nominated it, broulee is probably where the martyr’d bali bombers will take their 72 virgins…)

Jervis Bay. Great spot for scuba diving and even better when you’re living on the dive boat for the weekend.

@Jazz:
There were statistics that came out last year that said on long weekends the Batemans Bay\South coast area went from having 10k residents to around 40-50k temporarily.
Its crazy, but its nice to know that we’re the backbone of a local economy.

But Narooma is always nice, even when its cold.

North Durras – very quiet backwater – Bundilla (caravan park) = cheap GOOD accomodation – good rock and beach fishing at Depot Beach and no mobile reception.. its bliss 🙂

I second Thumper, If you make your way to the Spud, its worth following the track out to Blackfellows Point – there are a couple of wonderful little beaches that are rarely crowded (if not completely deserted), just watch for the wallabies and roos on the road there, they have a habit of breaking cover at the last moment.

Anywhere between Kiama and Eden ….
Beautiful part of the country 🙂

2nd broulee and add I’ve seen a guy with a salmon the size of my arm taken off the beach there.

Broulee is the place to be. Simply because of the beach.

As for South Coast in general, Mollymook is a winner. Only been there once but it is a great spot and will go there again. Mollymook Shores is a nice place to stay and its walking distance from the beach.
