A Question about Hoons and the Police

I had an experience on the roads this morning that made me think of all the recent postings about the Police cracking down on “hoons”.

As I was driving to work I was tail-gated by a new looking silver Holden Commodore on Northbourne. I was sticking to the speed limit (in the middle lane) and this obviously annoyed the guy driving the Commodore as he flung his car into the left lane (without indicating) and powered past me.

Then he pulled into the slip lane to turn onto Wakefield Av. and took the corner quick enough so I could hear his read-end breaking traction. I pulled up a couple of cars behind him at the lights onto Limestone and when they turned green, he took off in the right lane, then switched into the left lane (again, without indicating) before running a red light at the Cowper St. intersection.

I really want to know if I should report this guy (I have the rego etc.), but due to the fact that the Commodore had a plethora of antennas and blue and red lights on the rear parcel shelf (that were not on, nor was his siren) the only action I think that would get taken would be against me at the next RBT or vehicle inspection.

So, what would you do?

The a month ago I had a similar experience, it was a silver commodore on London Avenue, it was tailgating me, then when it pulled up next to me, I saw it was infact an unmarked police car because the male and female occupants were in police uniforms. They then took off at the lights doing far more than 60!

And whilst on the subject of tailgating, a few months ago I saw a police van tailgate a 4×4 so close it was about to hit, so it moved up a bit and they booked the poor bugger!

Police need better things to do!

Serendipity, unless the other emergency services use unmarked cars, it was a cop. Thing is, there was no one visibly in front of him, he had been tailgating me, remember, and the corner he sped through has a pedestrian crossing on it.

Ambulance, fire supervisors….

When you show someone on the road a bit of courtesy,

And here’s the big problem – courtesy on the road seems out of fashion. A number of people on this forum participated in a thread recently about whether someone should get the bird for sitting in the right hand lane without reason, and this included a number of responses along the lines of “it’s not illegal and I was doing the speed limit”. The point, though, is that it is still discourteous to other road users. The reality is that most of Canberra sits a few km/h above the speed limit – drive on practically any dual lane road and you’ll see this. If we could practice some simple things like keeping left and indicating, everyone’s driving experience would involve much less hassle.

Hope it was driven by a provisional licence holder…

As mentioned earlier, Police now using a SS Holden Ute as an unmarked. Just as an added bonus, this vehicle can sometimes be seen wearing a P plate.

So cunning you could pin a tail on it and call it a weasel.

Share the road.

What Gerry-built said. Ignore them. Flip your rear-view mirror while they’re there if it helps. These road-duals people get into are daft, the aggression shown by so many people on the road is a problem and you can see it’s not going away anytime soon if the police are doing it too!

When you show someone on the road a bit of courtesy, it’s funny to see the uncomprehension on their faces, followed by dawning surprise, and sometimes even a wave or a thank you. Sometimes.

What I was going to say!

Bakers get free bread – cops get to speed……It’s a perk of the job!!

Jesus Christ.

Is a perk for the clergy???

This too. It seems today I can only think of lines others have already posted.

I have been in an emergency vehicle, without lights and siren, when we went through a traffic light that was a little to the red side of orange (part of a convoy, didn’t want to lose the care in front), and got pulled over by a unmarked police car. They let us off with a warning, but I think that was because he didn’t want to take his “ful sik” XR6 turbo up the gutter we jumped when pulling over :o)

…drive like all other kids…

I’m not certain where this crass generalisation came from, but as a driver, cyclist and motorcyclist, the demographic that has most frequently attempted to kill me on the roads has been 55- to 65-year-olds.

I’ll just drive safely for myself and my passengers.

I’d appreciate if you also drove safely for other road users.

Geez serendipity I wonder who you work for? Still, you make some useful points in general terms.

Besides, you can bet your arse he’d forgotten about you long before you posted this; which you probably steamed over for some time (considering you took some time to post)…

Water off a duck’s back…

Share the road.

The unmarked cars don’t generally have any more than one extra antenna and from what i’ve seen the internal lights are normally clear these days as the lights are LEDs. Could be from on older car though..

You could try reporting the vehicle if you want, whether or not it will actually achieve anything is another story.

threeze, I think you should HTFU.

Sounds like a mad dog

Tooks, you’re sense of comradeship toward fellow officers is admirable.

Ah, highway patrol…say no more. That does not surprise me.

Ant (and Threeze), common tactic – cop sits on your tail, follows you, waits for you to do something wrong, then books you.

Common tactic? How would you know?

Yeah, I think it was my brother reckoned on Fairbairn he saw the cops tailgating a car ahead of him. It sped up and on went their lights.

Ant (and Threeze), common tactic – cop sits on your tail, follows you, waits for you to do something wrong, then books you.

You say the car had a plethora of antennas. Just how many? Two, three, four or more?

When they lowered the speed limit on Fairbairn through the back of Campbell to 60, I was tailgated along it by police more than once, for doing 60. Other people have reported this also.

Our local plods latest unmarked car is a black Commodore SS Ute.
You have been warned.

Wow if that’s all you’ve got to ‘worry’ about you’ve got it easy, In Queensland they’ve got an old torana with a surf board on the roof, sports bikes, cars with personalised plates, all sorts really.

Yeah, I figured you were being sarcastic!

I don’t believe there would be too many (if any) police that would commit an offence (tailgating) to push you to speed, then book you for doing so.

You can certainly follow it up though, if you feel strongly about it.

Just for your info, Australian Road Rule 305 relates to police vehicles:

http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/sa/consol_reg/arr210/s305.html

Tooks, I was being sarcastic.

But… I also drive a modified car and the initial tailgating smacked of The Man trying to get me to speed so he could book me – not that I was 100% sure it was a police car at that point, but I am super paranoid about solid colour Falcodores these days.

I appreciate your post though, and I think I will follow it up.

Threeze, your suggestion that you would somehow be targeted in a RBT or any other situation if you complained is just stupid, although I suspect you were just being sarcastic.

Regarding your question on whether or not you should complain, if it bothers you enough that you’ve posted here, then maybe it is worth complaining.

There are numerous reason why the car may have been driving in such a manner, but all members are accountable for how they drive. If you make a complaint, it will be up to that driver to justify his or her actions.

Yep, 2 weeks Police training and you’re invincibly competent. Able to exceed 110kmh without your brain turning to mush and becoming a lethal weapon.

Pity the training is not available to the mortal man.

I’ll probably go to hell for that one won’t I…

Speed kills – unless you recieve proper training in how to drive fast – then it’s ok….

Just post the rego here and have done with it 🙂

“This is a problem for us oldies…many cops now fit in the Generation Y category and drive like all other kids… no indicators; tailgating the car in front; hanging their arms out the window; talking on their mobile”

I remember when the generations were continuous, not discrete and described by a single letter, and young people uniformly acted sensibly, selflessly and responsibly.

Ah for the mythical old days of Gen Geriatric.

I was told many years ago that the police drivers never break the speed limit unless they are responding to a call or in pursuit, and they never park illegally or stop in a way that is dangerous to other traffic or pedestrians. Is this still a fair call?

If this bothers you enough, which it obviously does given that you started a thread about it, then report it. At least you have the rego details. I wouldn’t be concerned about the possible retribution, you can remain anonymous if you so wish is my understanding.

If that means breaking an occasional minor traffic law or upsetting the sensitivities of a vocal minority, then let it be

Indeed, but this might have just been a simple case of a police officer driving like a dorkhead, because he can.

Was it a police car, or was it other emergency services. There seems to be a general opinion that every car with aerials and blue and red lights are only police vehicles but all other emergency service vehicles are fitted out the same. I checked the legislation and cant find where flashing lights and sirens must be used at all times when “minor” traffic laws are breached. The legislation gives an exemption (rule 305) for any emergency service vehicle to not comply with traffic laws where required and where reasonable, with or without flashing lights and sirens. I guess what we dont know is what was the reason for the alleged driving. Whilst I agree that police and other emergency service people need to set a strong example in the community, is it fair to continually bash them on an assumption that it was a police car being driven by a police officer. There may be a thoroughy legitimate reason for what was witnessed…….or maybe there is not. For example, when police are covertly following or tracking a “suspect” the use of flashing lights and/or sirens are not used for very obvious reasons. Personally, I am happy to see the police catching crooks using whatever common sense means available. If that means breaking an occasional minor traffic law or upsetting the sensitivities of a vocal minority, then let it be.

The thin blue line will protect this hoon from any punishment.

threeze I used to love working on police cars ’cause you could then take them out for a bit of a flog, great fun was had. Maybe this was one of those times.

tylersmayhem12:56 pm 18 Sep 08

I’d report it for sure! Regardless of if it’s a cop or not – they of all people should be setting appropriate standards – unless of course they have their lights and sirens on.

amarooresident12:45 pm 18 Sep 08

I’d suggest nothing. Put it down to experience and turn it in to an entertaining dinner party anecdote.
