A quick walk around Marques In The Park

ACT Motor Clubs’s “Marques In The Park” braved the weather today in John Knight Park on the shores of Lake Ginninderra.

Sitting on a collapsible chair wearing fleece and beanie, sipping on a thermos, seems to be a key skill for attending these things. To be fair the weather was not conducive to lounging around in swimwear.

I’ll admit to being a little disappointed by the overwhelming Ford and Holden presences. I’m sure the modifications made are simply amazing if you’re into that sort of thing. But the exterior appearance is rarely novel.

Having said that there were some interesting vehicles to be seen on closer inspection.

Slideshow below, car nerds are welcome to try their skills identifying the tricky ones.

As far as I remember his daughter is, or was, a pretty handy racing car driver.

*Guffaw* Really?

Legend all right – known for the MG TD he sold with the wooden piston. (among other lulu’s)

Gulson Canberra – Ray Gulson – Legend and first licenced dealer in Canberra.

Over in Fyshwick or http://www.gulson.com.au

Farnarkler, who is this Gulson and where does one find him/her?

Auto Italia’s the one I was thinking of but couldn’t remember. It’s usually pretty good.

Gulson used to have a few old Juniors and 1600 GTs in his stock. Mind you, I haven’t been out to Fyshwick for a few years.

The Bates/Taylor Corolla was fresh from winning the Australian Rally Championship, so that’s kind of cool to have had their car on show.

farnarkler, Gulson is the local Porsche and Fiat dealer these days. Alfa, if they’re still around in Canberra are at the Marist end of Phillip.

Indeed, I’d been hoping for more exotics.

You’d be better checking out Auto Italia (usually during March) or the German Autofest (late September/early October) for more modern exotica. Although both shows also have more then enough early models in varying degrees of condition.

I’ll settle for the right sort of Volvo 140 – royal blue again, please.

I’m sure you could get them shipped….. I did like what had been done to the Morris Minor to turn it into a lead slead. ZZ Top eat your heart out. Does Ray Gulson still do a trade in exotics? He used to have some nice Alfas out the front of his place.

OK Johnboy. Anyone local got one of thoese gorgeous early seventies 100LS Audis they want sell me – preferable royal blue.

Can we keep it Canberra focussed please?

Can I interest sir, or madam, in a 71 Alfa Montreal for £11,500? It’ll fall apart but for those ten minutes when it does work properly you’ll be in heaven.

The weather was against the gaggle of Clubmans organised to attend. None have a roof, and most have no windscreen wipers (aeroscreens are popular).

There’s one for sale; £22,500. Only 58k miles. Bargain!!

You want real exotics, in the last year I’ve seen a four door Ferrari 456, built for the Sultan of Brunei and a four door 1973 Aston Martin V8. I rang Aston and their archivist said only two were built.

Usual Interceptor or Ferguson Formula 4WD Thumper???

I know someone in Kaleen who used to have a Ferrari 512 BBi in his garage. Also, in Giralang there used to be a Chevrolet Corvette LS something or other from about 1973 which was one of only half a dozen or so left in the World.

Anyone can stick a set of alloy wheels and a nice paintjob on a torana, monaro or falcon but, as johnboy says, where are the exotics?

Interesting to see a gaggle of Fiat X1/9s. I saw one here the other day and had to remark that it must be the only one in the UK which hasn’t been eaten away by rust!!

Indeed, I’d been hoping for more exotics.

Hmmm no Veyrons, Zondas or Carrera GTs. Oh well perhaps one day.

Aww Dang it. I forgot about this being on.
Missed it.
🙁

Too many Fords and Holdens? Representatives of the more civilised marques may well have been off in SA this weekend for the Classic Adelaide rally.

So what does a car have to do to be a marque?
