Suspect car

ACT Policing are calling for anyone who knows people associated with the above car to get in touch with them as part of the investigation into the Hughes shooting:

Police are appealing for the public’s assistance in their ongoing investigation into the shooting death of a 28-year-old man in Whittle Street, Hughes in the early hours of Monday, May 10.

A 20-year-old man has been charged in relation to this crime.

However, police believe others had conspired in this crime and by displaying a key component to the investigation – a 2003 black Kia Spectra sedan with ACT registration plates – are hoping this may prompt witnesses to come forward with any information which would assist in their identification.

The Kia sedan is distinctive because it has significant panel damage on the passenger’s side and is missing the passenger’s side mirror. It was in this condition on the night of the crime.

Police believe the gunman, who was lying in wait, approached from out of the darkness in Whittle Street and shot the victim in his vehicle without warning or provocation.

This Kia sedan is important to the investigation because around the time of the shooting, ACT Policing General Duties police on a routine patrol stopped this vehicle for speeding in Deakin.

The Kia driver and occupants were allowed to leave when the officer was urgently required to respond to the shooting incident. The officer noted the driver’s name, cautioned him and left.

The three male passengers in this Kia sedan on that night remain unidentified and are now significant persons of interest in this case.

Police would urge anyone who may have seen this car, and identify anyone in it, as on the evening of May 9 it was driving around areas such as the city, Northbourne Avenue, Adelaide Avenue, Deakin, Hughes and Garran to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the website at www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information to Crime Stoppers may be provided anonymously.

The three male passengers in this Kia sedan on that night remain unidentified and are now significant persons of interest in this case.

Officer interviewing the driver: “So son, what were the names of your three passengers?”
Driver: “Ah yeah, the bloke next to me, he was Mr Williams, or said he was.”
Officer: “Ok what about the other two?”
Driver: “Ah yeah, I didn’t know them, honest, but one called himself Mully, and the other bloke I knew as Justin. I dunno any more than that, honest.”
Officer: “OK, well off ya go, we’ll keep an eye out for them others, you better not warn them we’re lookin’ for them or we’ll come and getcha.”

Ta da! Expect to see the Wanted posters out soon.

I wonder what information the police had of the shooting before deciding to allow a speeding car in the vacinty to proceed. Perhaps they hadn’t put 2 x 2 together. ie speeding car through Deakin, shooting Hughes. If only life was that easy, and hindsight is a wonderful thing don’t you think?

Best to keep quiet and let people think you’re an idiot

Um am I the idiot here?

At least you went to the effort to confirm your status for us…

It’s intriguing that the response to the shooting made it easier to escape.

How so? Pulling over a car would be an extremely low priority compared to a priority 1 response that would be required to a report of a shooting, especially if the car was a full suburb away. Even if the car was speeding away from the scene, the police would be unlikely to pursue it if they were first on scene and with possible injured persons. The officer getting the name of the speeding driver and putting the two events together is a pretty good accomplishment.

It’s all a matter of luck and timing. The deceased was out of luck and the bad guys had good timing. Hopefully there is some forensic evidence left on the car to get close to an arrest. Somewhat intrigued though about the full story……….may be more to it.

They will be caught, I seriously dont think that there is a potential DB Cooper amongst them.

It’s intriguing that the response to the shooting made it easier to escape.
