A second arboretum?

The Minister for Territories, Jim Lloyd, put out a media release yesterday announcing that the Government was going to spend $1 million upgrading the EXISTING Lindsay Pryor Arboretum on Yarramundi reach.

Can someone please explain the relationship of the Lindsay Pryor Arboretum to the Chief Minister’s budding arboretum?

(Incidentally Lindsay Pryor was apparently the father of the Canberra Times’ cartoonist Geoff Pryor and how the Walkleys could overlook our Pryor is frankly beyond comprehension)

It’d be a third arboretum. T G Weston planted an arboretum in Yarralumla which formed the basis of Westbourne Woods, and provides plenty of shade for the Canberra elite whilst they enjoy 18 holes at Royal Canberra.

Thousands of phallic symbols. That is your answer.

I wonder how many schools could be kept open by cancelling the Stanhope Tree Museum? Or how many elective surgeries could be done at TCH, reducing their waiting lists?

Oooh how about something really novel: a stand-alone Birth Centre, as recommended in the Legislative Assembly review published about two years ago and never acted upon by Corbell or Gallagher. Just think, they could be assisting Canberra’s growth instead of planting trees during a drought.

Well, that explains that one, then – it’s another pissing contest between the ACT government and the feds. Wouldn’t want to run short of those, would we?

The Lindsay Prior Arboretum was set up by Canberra’s founding fathers between Yarramundi Reach and Scrivvener Dam. These days it looks like nothing more than a few pine trees, but originally it was planted with several varieties of trees to discover what will and will not grow in Canberra’s climate. The area was partially damaged by bushfires, and the money will, apparently, restore it to it’s original, or near original condition. Next question. If we have one Arboretum, why do we need another?
