A tale of two videos about Canberra

Canberra: The Musical

A few years back the ABC TV program The Beast poked fun at the capital with a cringe-inspiring video, ‘Canberra: The Musical’, mocking our roundabouts, fake lake and bureaucratic heritage.

One redeeming feature was a cameo appearance by the late great Peter Harvey at the end. Sorry to those of you who involved producing it, yes, it’s clever and meant in fun, but we’re just not fans of Canberra bashing here.

In contrast, a stunning film about our city made by a Canberra production company and featuring a reworked version of ‘Under the milky way’ has won a silver ‘Dolphin’ trophy in Cannes. Screencraft picked up the award at the annual Cannes Corporate Media and TV Awards on Friday. You can watch their gorgeous film, ‘Canberra. The world’s most liveable city’, here (go for full screen mode if you can):

Which one do you think best reflects life in our hometown?

That second one may have been beautifully shot but damn it was boring.. wow look Canberra has some wine, and some coffee.. there’s a lake, here’s a museu..zzzzzzzz..

I’d prefer to watch The Roundabout Crew’s ‘shit nobody says in Canberra’ – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuRDj-d7nVw

Yessss! My thoughts exactly. Beautiful shots but so, so boring – which is half the problem, people think Canberra is boring and then we go and make a boring video to try and convince people we’re not boring.

I’m happy for outsiders to think Canberra is boring and a cr@p place to live. People are far too defensive about criticism of their city. I like living here. I could live in any city in this country but I choose to live here. What other people think is irrelevant.

Oh man that was awful. And riotact is awful for sharing it again. Boo.

Another one I’d forgotten about, hilarious, thanks for posting it!

Is this the little film that was accused of plagiarising by another crew who had made a gorgeous movie set to the same music – a year or so earlier? Anyone know? I vaguely recall a discussion on social media …

I cannot believe that you haven’t mentioned this masterpiece! ‘Canberra – How many stars?’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fe5xuWmtlVA

I hadn’t seen that one! Love the arms spread wide demonstrating space to move in Civic.
