A theory on the Stromlo asbestos

asbestos at magnetic hut

The asbestos on the Mt Stromlo bike path has been there for over 40 years. It is associated with the ruins of what is locally known as the Magnetic Hut (not to be confused with The Magnetic Hut on ANU Campus).

Back in 1973 it was situated in a pine forest. You could see many hand sized pieces of bonded sheet asbestos scattered around two concrete piers and steps.

The 2003 fire removed all the trees and shrubs around this place and it should have been seen by the trail builders who situated the trail 4 meters from the piers.

Mountain bikes have been grinding the asbestos pieces and breathing the dust for 10 years before someone noticed!

Attached find a photo I took on April 5th. The white paint at the base of the piers shows the place of flaking bonded sheet asbestos which the workmen removed earlier.

If you scratch the ground around the piers you can still find asbestos pieces. But it is out of sight.

(except maybe ANU who probably had to pay the bill for the clean up).

ANU is poor as many of the residents of Northbourne Av. Flats. ACT taxpayers paid that bill.

So what are you saying? …we should keep the existing asbestos trail open?!?

As a MTBer and trail builder, I am happy to err on the side of caution here and see this trail closed. SFP will ensure a decent, and likely fun trail will replace this section, so should be a good outcome for all (except maybe ANU who probably had to pay the bill for the clean up).

Cool story. What’s the point?

Why should it have been seen by the trail builders?

Not sure if even now days they would require a identifying and safe handling card.when was the trail built?

Should the word “asbestos” be replaced with “material containing asbestos”? After all it’s not quite Wittenoom is it.
