The ANU has the slightly bizarre news that non-resident students will now be even more firmly branded as losers with the creation of “Griffin Hall”.

Griffin Hall will offer academic support and social engagement for all non-residential students at ANU. It will also provide access to a range of social, cultural and sporting events that are usually associated with established residential halls and colleges.

As far as possible, the Hall aims to replicate the advantages of residential life. Students are assigned to virtual ‘floors’ and Community Assistants are appointed to look after the welfare of the students on each ‘floor’. Members of the Hall can also join sporting teams, allowing them to participate in inter-hall events and competitions alongside residential students. Up to 350 students are expected to become members of Griffin Hall in 2011.

It makes sense from an administrative perspective though, there are already service delivery models (such as the Learning Communities project) being built using the administrative structures of the residential halls and colleges, virtual halls gives greater access to all the other students to various things without having to spend a lot of time developing some new admin structure to house it all in.

The academic support and social activities of colleges… and without the constant stream of people waking you up at 3am with drunken wanderings, or at 6am on a Sunday to coerce you to support their stupid netball team? Gosh, this would have been great for all my friends who used to be at ANU colleges and then moved out as soon as possible because college drove them freaking CRAZY.

As far as possible, the Hall aims to replicate the advantages of residential life.

One night stands with drunk firstyears? Isn’t that what the bar is for?

Tragic.
