ACT Policing have arrested a 59-year-old Canberra businessman from Griffith for drug offences yesterday (Wednesday, 6 July).

On July 6 ACT Policing’s Criminal Investigations concluded a controlled operation on the importation of an illegal substance, in which police put in place a substitute material.

About 7pm yesterday members of the SRS Tactical Response team executed forced entry to a premises in Barrier Street, Fyshwick. A white paste substituted by police for a border controlled drug was found in an office at the premises. The man was arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House.

He is charged with attempt to posses marketable quantity of a border controlled drug. He will face the ACT Magistrates Court later today.

Might be some more to come of this in the near future. The Australian Business Register has no record of “Charlie Black” in the ACT as a business or trading name or part of any business or trading name.

John Harrington is on the register but is listed as a “Sole Trader” first registered in Mar 2010, which would be difficult for a restaurant.

A search of the ASIC database reveals that in the same month John Harrington registered as a sole trader, a private company called Charlie Black Aust Pty Ltd was registered in Red Hill, replacing a company registration previously known as On The Corner Pty Ltd. (An ironic name given a charge for drug trade)

The ASIC database also shows that it was not until April this year that he registered a business name in the ACT for “Charlie Black Brasserie”.

So trading without business name registered for a time + being listed as a sole trader = sloppy business practice or something more sinister.

The ABN database is far from accurate. You could apply for an ABN as the proprietor of Charlie Black and they’d give you an ABN under that name. It doesn’t prove a thing. Also, they are trading as the company name they registered, which is perfectly okay to do. I’m glad you’re creative, because you certainly have no idea about this topic.

Amazed his arrest took so long!

And what are you trying to say Creative_Canberran?

I might point out to you that John Harrignton is not an owner of the comapny that runs Charlie Black’s. And it’s very easy to find this out by doing an ASIC’s search.
He did drink there, as do a lot of people!

Well he registered for an ABN on Mar 1 2010 and Charlie Black Pty Ltd registered with ASIC on Mar 3 2010. That is quite the coincidence.

Unfortunately ASIC’s online database does not list company owners or directors, despite what you say. You must instead purchase a company extract via the links from ASIC.

It’s interesting that The Canberra Times has removed reference to Charlie Black in its article, though their Facebook still says he’s the owner. Also interesting is Win News tonight did not even say his name, just saying “a businessman”.
If you go back and look at various interviews including a transcript of Stateline from 2006 about worker exploitation he was involved in, it’s curious that he’s referred to constantly as a “restaurant owner” but no story ever says what establishment(s) he owns.

Harrington was also responsible for the importing of kitchen hands to work for cheap labour in Kingston.

Fair enough.. As i stated, only a rumour that can now be squashed. Slapped myself real hard. A question though, if he owns a restaurant in Manuka, what was the property in Barrier St he was arrested from? Does he have a storeroom there?

There’s one or two courier depots in that street. There’s also a couple of restaurant suppliers and a brothel. There’s certainly some properties out there available for warehousing and storage but quite large.

Same dude been running venues in Canberra for as long as I can remember? Was involved in other nightclubbie venues and liked sending champagne bottles to visiting models?

Firstly I would like to point out that the man, a personal friend, that some people were referring to, who owns the clothing store in Barrier St, is most certainly not a dealer of any kind and any reference to him involved in any criminal activity would be absolutely absurd. A slap on the wrist to you all, bunch of bitches.

Secondly, hooray for the cops who have finally arrested this pig in society. Its about time and should have been done many years ago.

Oh, no. The owner of Charlie Black in Manuka. Surely not the death of another venue for live, original music in this city.

Haha, I always heard rumours that the owner of Charlie Black was a coke dealer… Guess they weren’t just rumours!

I think you’ll find the clothing store you are all thinking of is not correct. He actually lives north side and is not 57!
