ABS loses its appeal – staff celebrate

johnboy 15 May 2009 9

The ABC reports that the Bureau of Statistics has lost its appeal at the Industrial Relations Commission which would have let it sack staff no longer needed.

Nadine Flood from the Community and Public Sector Union says staff are delighted with the outcome.

“I think staff and ABS are really pleased that the commission has up-held – for a second time – the decision that was made was unfair and that if you do need to make job reductions there’s a proper way of doing that that respects employees rights,” she said.

Why would the ABS be happy about losing the appeal?

“I think staff and ABS are really pleased that the commission has up-held – for a second time – the decision that was made was unfair and that if you do need to make job reductions there’s a proper way of doing that that respects employees rights,” she said.

The story appears to have disappeared from the ABC website. And I suspect the line “I think staff and ABS…” was probably misquoted and probably should be “I think staff at ABS…” – makes more sense.

The CPSU has a media release on the ruling at: http://www.cpsu.org.au/campaigns/news/13243.html

You only have to look at those shonky unemployment figures issued last week to see that staff cutbacks are already hurting ABS badly.
