Abyss

Rumours have been bouncing around this afternoon that infamous Canberran artist Abyss .607 was caught in the act and is in trouble with the law.

Already at least one support group has appeared on Facebook to try and raise funds to help Abyss with any fines/legal costs he may occur, but sadly nobody seems to know if the rumor is true yet.

Well except Abyss, he probably knows.

While it is graffiti and illegal, I’m a massive fan of his work and would be sad to see this turn out to be true.

What about you Rioters?

Do you want to see Abyss roam free to decorate our city with weird magic-space-alien-gods or whatever those little creatures are?

Or do you want his graffiti off the streets?

Do you want to see Abyss .607 go free?

This really should have been dealt with a long time ago. I guess there’s more to deal with then just bust people who scribble their shitty names over everything.

Throw the book at the little cretin, and at anyone who tries to dignify his pathetic childish attention seeking vandalism as “art”. Strap them down on a gurney and spray them head to toe with gloss enamel then send them on their way with a can of thinners. Brain dead little morons.

Perhaps he should consider some sort of tertiary education to further his artistic skills and knowledge.

A lot of the bathrooms and walls in one of the UC buildings seem to have a fair bit of his work in there. I’d say he’s already getting a tertiary education in some design area.

I like his work a lot.

Oh noes! What a terrifying thought. Someone running around painting art on otherwise boring concrete walls. Lock ’em up and throw away the key. He’s probably a cyclist too. They’re all one and the same.

Well I suppose they could trial their art on their house, or their garage door ( but be carefull, years ago a bloke painted a swastika on his garage door, and it caused all sorts of excitement). And then perhaps they could put it on their vehicle, and travel around with their art. See the odd kombi van doing this.

He’s got talent. Good. I am genuinely envious of his artistic ability. However, I don’t want his talent shoved down my throat. I am a good shot with a rifle, but don’t shoot his windows. I am a good driver, but do not drive in his front yard. I am good at my job, but do not bang on his door demanding his time/effort/money for my talent. I like different artworks than Abyss, so it’s ok to paint his walls with my own pictures? My absolute lack of musical ability means I limit my piano playing to private space. Should I record it instead and broadcast it outside his residence all day, everyday? And so on.

His talents could be far better utilised than inflicting them on others.

Before I get started, I’d like to say that Canberra already has far too much “art”, and almost all of it is absolutely terrible and a depressing waste of money (like the monstrosity ‘Moth’).

I have no issue with the art itself, he seems quite capable of doing some decent pictures. What I do have issue with, is the defacement of public and private areas.
I get that it’s meant to be “edgy” and all of that, but legitimate art doesn’t come from the back of a wall. The Govt. and business’ pay people a lot of money to go and clean graffiti from walls, and since art is objective, there is no way to determine what is “art” and what is graffiti, so it should be treated as the latter.

Now, the artist seems to be fairly talented.

Perhaps he should consider some sort of tertiary education to further his artistic skills and knowledge. Perhaps he could contact the business with his idea for that wall, and be legally allowed to put it up. Perhaps if he had followed a legal pathway, he could have set himself up a nice little Govt. contract to beautify parts of Canberra.

As it stands though, I feel he should get the full punishment from the law. What he did was illegal, regardless of whether or not it is ‘good’ art. We should not, in any way, be encouraging this behavior (it’s Ok to flaunt the laws, as long as it looks pretty) and I hope any copy-cat artists get an even bigger punishment.

‘…legitimate art doesn’t come from the back of a wall.’ Yes, every mural in the history of the world has been total crap.

Except those done on the front of a wall…

Regardless of how good or bad a particular “artwork” might be, if the canvas [concrete wall] doesn’t belong to them, they don’t have the right to paint on it. It might start as an underpass, then move to a bus shelter, then it ends up on people’s backyard fences, their houses, shopping center windows, cars etc.The line has to be drawn and unless permission is granted, the “artists” have no right to inflict the public with their view of what is beautiful.

I imagine some boring jerk is sitting around saying “but how do we legislate to define art?”

People. What a bunch of bastards. http://bit.ly/18VlTVT

Even the eye tags look a helluva lot better than the golden arches. Just sayin.

While I do like some of the more artistic graffiti adorning our fair city, not punishing Mr Abyss for his criminal acts would set a precedent for not pursuing and punishing the other cretins like the WILS and falsies mob that scrawl meaningless rubbish on walls like some sort of territorial marking ceremony.
