ACT and Victorian men living longest

This story here from The Herald and again at Live News

“MEN in Canberra and Melbourne will live longer than in other Australian cities…”

But women almost everywhere else are still beating us. According to the article healthier living and advancements in medical technology have increased life expectancy, but surely in the case of ACT men there is a degree of sheer tenacity, bloddy mindedness and a good serving of ticker involved too.

Apparently we now have the second highest life expectancies in the world, which seems strange considering the latest reports that we are also the most obese nation.

Also I don’t know about you but “researchers are predicting a “centenarian army” of 78,000 by 2055″ sounds creepy enough to be the subject of a new Night of the Living Dead style horror movie.

So does that mean I’ve increased my life expectancy just by moving here from NSW?

Woohoo!!! 😀

Aside from the fact that I’m now drinking more and eating out more since I’ve moved here the benefits(???) of living in such a rich, vibrant and diverse community…

A factor in the lower male life expectancy is risk-taking and suicide during young adulthood bringing down the average. If it is true that Canberra has a high suicide rate then you can imagine the remainder must have an even higher life expectancy than the Vics.

I’m wondering if men from the ACT still hold the highest rate of suicide per capita of any other city in Australia? These were statistics for many years, but I wonder if this is still the case?

You know bigred, I think there might actually be some statistical basis for your comment!

Vic Bitterman…. and vice versa… (currently in VIC) fingers crossed anyway! Damn, I really should put that cigarette out for good….and stop drinking coffee, and… and… and…

The weaker Vics and Territorians migrate to NSW coast and QLD, hence reducing the average over there.

Sweet. So those of us who grew up in Victoria, and subsequently moved here will live the longest of all!! 🙂
