ACT election candidate bake-off: Sex Party team

Australian Sex Party candidates Venus de Siren, Steven Bailey and Andrew Dewson.

Of course they cooked a hash cake with a bright pink icing penis on top for our ACT election candidate bake-off: they’re the civil libertarian Australian Sex Party.

What was more surprising was that joining lead candidate Steven Bailey in this Kaleen kitchen were two other candidates, sex worker Venus de Siren (aka Monique Shepherd) and the party’s newest recruit, Andrew Dewson.

Dewson is running in Yerrabi, and had until last week been publicly positioning himself as an independent candidate.

Mr Bailey was pleased Mr Dewson was joining the fold.

“This is actually big news, because Andrew has been running for twelve months as an independent and he has finally seen the light that the Sex Party is the fourth most voted for party in Canberra, and we’re going to win a few seats,” Mr Bailey said.

The Sex Party team’s cake consisted of zucchini, flour, vanilla, nutmeg, walnuts and marijuana (both stirred through the mixture and sprinkled on top).

“I don’t actually smoke it myself, but I think would die for the right for other people to smoke it,” Mr Bailey said.

“We want to treat cannabis as a medical issue, not a legal issue, so let’s stop putting people behind bars for using drugs and let’s start helping them.”

The beetroot penis is to remind voters who might otherwise choose to vote informal by drawing a phallic symbol on their ballot paper that they should instead consider voting Sex.

“The reason that we didn’t get 4 per cent [in the Federal Senate election], where we would’ve got $32,000 of public funding, was because many drew this [gestures to pink penis] on the ballot paper,” Mr Bailey said.

“People, please, do not draw penises on the ballot paper. If you’re going to draw a penis, just vote for the Sex Party.”

I can think of many reasons NOT to vote for the Sex Party, the biggest being that, while it hangs its hat on popular issues, it’s raison d’etre is to lobby for the porn/sex industry. I don’t care what two consenting adults do, but much porn these days is outright violence towards women.

Don’t forget that Robbie Swan and Fiona Patten, the Sex Party’s founders, owned (and perhaps still own) a lucrative business importing porn. For many years they’ve fought governments to change and/or remove film classifications and internet filters. Recently, a 12 year old boy in Sydney was charged with raping a girl half his age. Kids are growing up in a pornified culture, and little boys raping is what results.

Let’s not forget that this is a libertarian party, just like David Leyonjhelm and other extreme right wing ideologues. Their idea of governing is not to legislate for anything; not to provide a safety net for the most vulnerable and marginalised in our community. They would decriminalise drugs, guns, exploitation of vulnerable women. There’d be a casino in every suburb, because problem gamblers are not their responsibility. There’d be a brothel on ever corner, because every vulnerable and impoverished woman should have the right to suck penis for money. There’d be porn 24/7 everywhere, because kids and women don’t matter. Every troubled teenager would have free and easy access to drugs, because ‘nanny state’. There’d be a gun in every household, because ‘guns don’t kill, people do’.

They believe in the survival of the fittest; that there is no society, only the individual; and that all those individuals, whether poor or rich, educated and non-educated, have the same bargaining power and are on a level playing field. They are the antithesis of what underpins our social cohesion.

The Sex Party doesn’t stand on any platform, except if Penis Rights is a platform. It’s bereft of ideology, social responsibility, vision and integrity.

I was considering voting for the Sex Party until they declared war on Black Mountain Tower and called it an eyesore. It’s underutilised, yes, but I fundamentally disagree that it is a blight on the landscape.
