ACT Election Polling Places, Liberals still trying

It looks like the Labor party must have some very good polling as the booth I went to this morning (red hill) had about 80 liberal signs 20 liberal volunteers, I didn’t notice any Volunteers for the greens or labor and only a few signs. Did the labor party go out and party early after reading the CT?

On another note the Haire Clarke system with the Robson Rotation is crazy, you have libs fighting with each other to give you their candidates piece of paper and due to the rotation no one has a real how to vote card. Ad that to the 100m exclusion and it’s all a bit mish mash.

Interesting choice of major election issues: signs, policy and scare campaign tactics.

Not so much, but when the last thing you see when walking in to vote is a Latest Scare Campaign sign in a place easily verifiable as being illegal and the candidates’ supporters not caring about law, it kind of sticks in your mind when you’re filling in some numbers less than a minute later.

Then, to get philosophical, how do you trade off a perception of no policies against a perception of inept government, or a perception of a lack of genuine cross-bench independence? (All perception since that’s what we vote on in the end.)

By not voting based on party affiliation, having done some research into relevant candidates previous achievements, and immediately giving my low-value numbers to those people who shit me the most, having some juggling go on for the “maybe these will be relevant if someone dies during their term” countback numbers, and then for my 1-7 range going with the results of making up my mind prior to election day and not being easily swayed by the “We will shower gold from the sky”promise vagaries of the campaign?

Steele, I have been expressing my intention to change votes, yet am no party hack. In fact, I have been posting on Riot since at least 2007 (the last time I got a new password). How about you? I don’t recall seeing your name on Riot before . . . ?

At Waramanga there was a Liberal Party trailer parked just inside the 100m exclusion zone.

Their disregard for electoral law was one of the reasons they were not ranked quite as highly as they could have been on my vote, the other was mostly the fact they haven’t produced any reasonable policy in years, and decided to go scare campaigning.

Interesting choice of major election issues: signs, policy and scare campaign tactics. Since all 3 parties did the first (every party has had non-compliant signs, the media coverage suggests that the Libs just had more) and last (the Libs will sack all the ACTPS), I assume you really meant the dearth of policies for the last four years.

Aranda was very civilised. Everyone was together on the one corner.

I will take this last opportunity to farewell the party hacks who created an account on RA with the odd notion that they could influence the election by starting a post like this – I have always voted x but this time I am going to vote y because I’m really disappointed blah blah. You knuckleheads!

Seconded 🙂
The scary thing is that half of them will probably be candidates next time around *eek*

I trust the Libs’ signs and personnel were the required 100m back?!

A fair bit on Twitter about Liberals being forced to take signs down – can anyone cnfirm?

Yes it’s true. Rangers forcing them to take them down. Max size is 1200×900. Also reports of them being put back up after the ranger leaves! Some confiscations in Belco.
The Law and Order Party there for you people.

I’m trying to decide whether the OP’s post is a wind up, or they really have a say in the future direction of democracy in the ACT – a chilling thought if the latter.

I voted early (but not often) this election and took great pleasure in numbering all 20 of the boxes on my Brindabella ballot paper. It’s a lot of fun to be able to preference against the incumbents.

Best of luck to Stuart, Mark and Glen from the Pirate Party!

It was reported by Win News.

I’m hearing on twitter, from Labor wonks admittedly, that the Liberals signs were too large and too close to the polling places.
I’ve yet to head out to a polling place so I haven’t seen it for myself.

Thanks for the support, I’m proud to be among the first in the pirate movement, along with Mark Gibbons and Stuart Biggs. to go to an election in Australia, and look forward to seeing the party become a strong force in Australian politics at all levels over the coming years.

Given that you have to be 100 mts from booths, the ALP actually manned shopping centres near booths today. I drove past Florey and Jamison and saw crews of young ALP supporters talking to people at the shops and then stopped by Kippax, same deal; probably more than a dozen or so at Kippax alone.

If any party can’t get volunteers, you can bet it’s the Liberals; hence why they rely on hideous banners and trailers carrying Zed’s face all around town.

At my local polling place the volunteers are stranded outside the parking area. You can see the disappointed look on their faces as all the voters cruise past safe from thrusting hands. There really were some pitiful expressions.

Sounds like a robust democracy to me 😉
