ACT Government can't run a dump

I’ve just been to the dump at Mitchell – absolute chaos. The green waste facility is closed, so there are people lining up to reluctantly dump green waste. People are piling their rubbish outside the dump itself, as there is none of the usual clearing machinery in action. I wish I had taken my camera! When I was there at 11.45 the inner part of the dump was completely clear; there was masses of rubbish piled up both sides – and people couldn’t then throw their rubbish into the still-empty middle. So what were they doing? Piling it up to three metres of the backing-up lanes. My rubbish was light, so I was able to throw it where it should have been. Driving away, there was a queue of 10 trailers waiting to add to the debacle, and the money-taker was merrily waving them in to add to the pile.

I trod on a spiky metal object hidden under some of the greenwaste in my effort to throw my stuff clear – luckily I was wearing shoes with sturdy soles.

Hundreds of dumpers during the Christmas/New Years week is hardly unforeseen. Why can’t Jon Stanhope’s government run a dump?

I-Filed and LSWCHP “It seems like no matter who you vote for, you just end up with another f*cking politician.”
Taken you people a while to work that out hasn’t it?! They are all only in it for one person regardless of what propoganda they sprout.

LHWCSP #3: Actually, a Labor voter until the last election. My bets are off now, federally as well as locally.

I-Filed: My apologies. And my voting behaviour matches yours, after 30 years of staunchly supporting Labor. I understand your frustration. It seems like no matter who you vote for, you just end up with another f*cking politician.

Truth is a defence. So is public interest.

@Golden-Alpine # 24: That is a clever insight, but in the same way I am a fan of cricket, I am equally not a fan of our Cheif Minister.

@Jethro # 21: I don’t follow twitter and I don’t know what a meme is but I now understand the gag, thanks for pointing that out.

I’d rather they be closed and have a break rather than them put up fees in next years rates.

Just spent Christmas with friends from Gosford and Melbourne. Subject of council pick ups arose. They pay less rates by a long shot and get a spectacular array of clean up options.

We dont have them in the ACT, our mayor and his wife are too busy doing human rights in China, human rights in the ACT (Mully and CRK) etc. to be pissed around with BS like waste management.

@Jethro – +1. There are more important things than whether CSG’s open over xmas or not.

BTW – CSG is always closed over xmas. Inconvenient, but they deserve their break same as anyone else.

Chilax, it’s like that every year at this time. Hardly any facilities are open and those that are run at the bare minimum due to their staff taking well deserved holidays with their families.

The main problem is that everyone starts using the week between xmas and ny to do general cleanups at their homes and then expect the staff at the waste facilities to be at their beckon call. i.e. “Good Heavens – those rabble that work at the waste depot were off on a holiday – how absurd! – it’s preposterous!”

Try again in a week or two and all should be back to normal – in the mean time, sit back, enjoy your break and stop picking on others for doing the same.

If that is the attitude of Cricket Australia, it’s no wonder we lost. Perhaps some focus could be aimed at more appropriate sources like the selectors instead of Punter (yes, I know. I can safely say we are not the same man. I am a only a Australian Cricket fan with an opinion). I would like to think we are steering younger talent on the right path to secure our cricketing future, but are we?”

Is this supposed to be a subliminal pro-message for his Chifleyness Stanhope?

CSG is accepting Green Waste at Parkwood.

I believe it is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek reference to a twitter meme that is doing the rounds at the moment. eg. Stuck in traffic #itspontingsfault

“Who cares if they can’t run the tip properly? At least we have homosexual marriages thanks to the strenuous efforts of Stanhope and his army of bureaucrats.”

Ahhh, yes. The ol’ “they can’t deliver services 100% effectively, so we should suspend progress on human rights reform” argument.

Who cares if they can’t run the tip properly? At least we have homosexual marriages thanks to the strenuous efforts of Stanhope and his army of bureaucrats.

My bad, I didn’t realise Canberra Sand and Gravel was an ACT Government green waste facility.

I’ve just returned from taking a load of rubbish to the Mitchell Resource Management Centre. Didn’t have to wait, drove straight in. There was a bit of rubbish piled up, but you’ll be happy to know there was a man in his bob cat cleaning it up. Not sure if it was John Stanhope, but it could have been. I was in and out in under 15 minutes. We can all stand down, the world isn’t coming to an end after all.

Does anybody know what days the Mugga Lane green waste tip is open?

u should have just gone to Canberra Sand and Gravel who would taken it for a buck.

Err, if you had read the post, you would have seen mentioned that the Canberra Sand and Gravel (the people who take green waste) are closed. For those of you wondering when they re-open – they are closed until Jan 6.
All a bit of a debacle really

H1NG0 – I think they labor under the mistaken belief that CSG is part of ACT Waste.

CSG Mitchell is closed to 6th of January. My wife and I went to drop some waste there, found it closed, and drove to Mugga Lane instead. Sad to see many others just take the shorter trip…

“All good until the last sentence, at which point I thought “Liberal Party apparatchik at work…delete all reference”.

Of course, Stanhope et al can do no wrong.”

Not at all. I’m well aware of the inadequacies of Mr Stanhope’s government. Just say “Andrew Barr” for example, and you’ll have me in either fits of laughter or tears, depending on my mood at the time. Perhaps even foaming at the mouth.

I just thought the segue from garbage to Stanhope seemed more than a little contrived. Although, having now written those words…

“Stanhopes govt doesn’t run the dump, they pay Thiess to run it for them”

Yes and having rubbish pile up outside of the push pit is a breach of their contract, but ACTNowaste has never really cared about breach of contracts before so why start now.

I’m still owed $83,000 from working at that site by a previous sub-contractor to Thiess Services. Thiess failed to pay their sub-contractor for performing operational duties on site and ACT Nowaste refuses to make them pay even though the contract gives them the power to do so.

Check the evidence presented to the committee http://www.hansard.act.gov.au/hansard/2009/comms/public29.pdf

Stanhope’s response to me was an email threatening legal action if I continue to make claims of corruption and incompetance by ACT Nowaste – hey Jon I stand by those claims and hope the ACT Auditor Generals Waste Peformance audit next year nails you to the wall.

Canberra Sand and Gravel is closed, as per the comment “the green waste facility is closed…”

I called ahead (given the week between xmas and nye) and made sure my local was open. Visited today and was through there in a breeze. Given mine was Mugga Lane, perhaps it is more organised there, but my load was green waste, ‘lots’ of paper/cardboard for recycling and I even dropped off an item to (what was revolve but can’t remember the name) who took it with a cheerful thanks. I had to wait while corkhill pushed already dumped green waste to the side but it wasn’t very long.

I suspect your tip was trying to manage the expectant mountain of refuse generated by xmas with staff who, could also have been on holidays perhaps cleaning out their own gardens and houses of waste and dumping this at the tip, but are dedicated to help the remainder of the sometimes ungrateful greater community dispose of their own waste before having to think about what their plans may be for NYE. My point is, however they manage their business at a time when everyone else has time orf, try and be a little more patient, it is a busy time of year for them and things can take a little more time.

Oh, as a kind of name sake, I gotta say to @Knoobs #1; Dude, are you serious? Does the loss of the ashes rest on one man? Is that what is steering Australian Cricket? Stanhopes govt doesn’t run the dump, they pay Thiess to run it for them

Queueless green waste disposal 400m down the road.

Expecting the tip to be quiet the first ‘trading’ day after the Xmas break.

But its all someone else’s fault.

You trod on something sharp at a tip. Cry me a river.

Somebody call a whambulance

Yeah i was there round 10am and I’d never seen so many ppl there. The rubbish was starting to pile up into the lanes. I saw a lot of big trucks dumping trash pack green waste in the normal rubbish section. I advise anyone to get there early.

Complaining because the tip is messy? Really?

I believe it’s called a resource management centre (RMC).

All good until the last sentence, at which point I thought “Liberal Party apparatchik at work…delete all reference”.

The staff are probably enjoying their public holiday and spending time with their families, just like you and most other ACT Govt. employees.

I went a couple of weeks ago on a sunday. The cue to get in was so long it was out of the slip lane. Similar antics inside. I don’t think they could push it into the compactor quicker then people throwing it in.
I believe it is run by theiss and not the government.

Bring back Parkwood! and Gininderra Falls!
